Da Colonia risalirono il Reno fino a Bonn, Magonza, Mannheim e infine a Heidelberg, dove trovarono impiego come pittori alla corte di Karl-Ludwig. Tornati in patria nel 1654, nel 1660 Gerrit si unì alla corporazione e produsse le sue prime opere in autonomia. La produzione più nota dell'artista sono le vedute di città, ma si dedicò anche a raffigurare paesaggi pastorali frutto dei suoi disegni dal vero. L'opera è corredata da una scheda critica di Raffaella Colace.

Signed and dated lower left: g.bergheyde 1661 Gerrit Berckheyde's 1661 view of the town fortifications of Cleves is listed in C. Lawrence's catalogue raisonné with an unknown whereabouts and unclear topography. A comparison with a view by Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712), which shows Cleves as seen from the Mühlberg, suggests that the present picture is of the town wall of Cleves bordering the Kermisdahl river (see RKD picture archive, no. 64963). The Haarlem painter Gerrit Berckheyde travelled through Germany with his older brother Job in the second half of the 1650s. It is unclear exactly when and for how long. The brothers worked in Cologne, Mannheim, Bonn and Heidelberg. Berckheyde was one of the earliest Dutch specialists for city views. His numerous views of Cologne's churches and squares are mostly capricci, which do not depict an exact topography but create an ideal cityscape.

In ebonisiertem Profilrahmen. Ein schlaglichtartig von links her beleuchteter Innenraum, der durch eine beleuchtete Puttostatue, die dem Maler als Modell dienen mag, sekundär Beleuchtung empfängt, zeigt in wenigen Kontrasten Draperien und einen Teppich, der auf einem Tisch liegt, dahinter der zeichnende Künstler. Ein für Berckheyde nicht ganz typisches Motiv, war er ja auf Stadtveduten und Innenansichten von Kirchen spezialisiert. Es ist also zu vermuten, dass dieses Gemälde in der frühen Schaffensphase des genannten Malers entstand, denn es sind von seinem Lehrer Job Adriaensz Berckheyde einige Gemälde mit ähnlichen intimen Innenraumansichten bekannt. Il avait effectué auparavant avec son frère un séjour de trois ans en Allemagne, dans la région du Rhin, visitant notamment Cologne et Heidelberg, et rapportant tout un répertoire de motifs architecturaux dessinés sur place et qui peuplèrent ensuite ses paysages. L'entrée de village que nous présentons, avec ces deux femmes en conversation entourées d'animaux, non loin d'une imposante porte dont l'arche laisse entrevoir l'horizon, est caractéristique de son œuvre. La lumière blonde de fin de journée et le séduisant détail du mouton profitant de la pause pour s'abreuver dans une flaque d'eau renforcent le charme de cette scène de la vie quotidienne dans la Hollande du XVIIe siècle. Berckheyde h: 51,50 w: 40 cm Provenance : Collection de Madame la douairière van Reede van Oudtschoorn, selon sa carte de visite au verso ; Collection particulière, Alsace Commentaire : Sur un magnifique panneau de chêne sélectionné avec le plus grand soin, le peintre Gerrit Berckheyde a peint, probablement au début des années 1670, la place la plus célèbre d'Amsterdam. Nous distinguons à gauche une aile de l'hôtel de ville construit entre 1648 et 1655 par l'architecte Jacob van Campen et à droite la Nieuwe Kerk. Le palais du Dam est depuis toujours la fierté des amstellodamois. Ce projet extrêmement ambitieux devait permettre d'asseoir la puissance de la récente Hollande. Financé grâce à l'argent reçu lors du traité de Westphalie, il constituait au XVIIe siècle le plus grand bâtiment administratif d'Europe. Il serait anachronique de dire que sa gigantesque verticalité annonce les buildings new-yorkais construits à la fin du XIXe siècle mais il s'agissait en tout aux yeux des hollandais de la huitième merveille du monde. Du ciel chargé de nuages s'échappe une lumière franche qui vient frapper la robe grise du cheval au centre de la composition. Des bourgeois échangent avec un marchant enturbanné du Levant et les " petits métiers " vaquent à leurs occupations. Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde, 1638 Haarlem - 1698, Jüngerer Bruder und Schüler von Job Berckheyde IDEALE RÖMISCHE STADTLANDSCHAFT MIT REICHER FIGURENSTAFFAGE Öl auf Eichenholz. Parkettiert. 47,5 x 65 cm. Unten mittig signiert „Gerrit Berck Heyde“. Ohne je in Italien gewesen zu sein, schuf der Künstler mehrere Ansichten aus Rom, von denen sich eine im Louvre, eine andere in der Sammlung Novak befand. Weitere Gemälde seiner Hand befinden sich in mehreren öffentlichen Sammlungen. So ist eine Ansicht von Amsterdam im Museum zu Antwerpen, mit der typischen Schreibweise signiert „Gerrit Berck Heyde“. Das Gemälde führt auf einer fantastischen Reise ins südliche Rom und zeigt einige wesentliche Versatzstücke antiker Architektur, wie etwa die drei Säulen des Forums, eine Tempelfassade im Hintergrund oder aber auch Andeutungen etwa der Caracalla Thermen, dazwischen frühchristliche Kirche mit Campanile. Links am Bildrand ein alter, hoher Mauerturm. Im Vordergrund haben sich mehrere Personen in Begleitung von Mauleseln und vor Karren gespannten Ochsen um eine Verkäuferin mit Obst gruppiert. Fantasievolle Gemälde der römischen, südlichen Landschaften waren zu seiner Zeit äußerst beliebt, sodass die Bilder seiner Hand auch von zeitgenössischen Dichtern besungen wurden. Signed “Gerrit Berck Heyde“ at centre below. Without ever having been to Italy, the artist created several views of Rome, of which one was held at the Louvre and another at the Novak collection. Imaginative paintings of Roman, southern landscapes were very popular during his time and his paintings were also praised by contemporary poets.
