RACHEL BERMAN (1946-2014)BOMBAY MINOR, LOWER EAST SIDE N.Y CITYmixed media on papersigned, titled and dated 2010 13.75 ins x 11.25 ins; 34.9 cms x 28.6 cms Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoLiterature:“Rachel Berman: the Struggle with Self,” in Queen’s Quarterly, Vol. 120, Issue 2, Summer 2013, page 282.Painter and illustrator Rachel Berman described her paintings as autobiographical “...they are about me trying to find out who I am.” Her quest for identity was arduous: she grew up in New Orleans under the name Susan King, discovered at the age of 50 that she was adopted, and spent her late adulthood exploring her Jewish heritage. Berman’s urban landscapes, inspired by her travels to Morocco, London, Paris, Ireland and New York, have the distinct characteristics of receding perspective and intricately detailed interiors. The people she met on those travels became the subjects of her anecdotal works and reflect society’s marginalized.Estimate: $600–800

RACHEL BERMAN(AND THE OLD MARCHESA REMEMBERED) THE TEASHOPS IN THE MOSKVA - PARLIAMENT STREET, CABBAGETOWNacrylic on panel 11.5 ins x 21.25 ins; 29.2 cms x 54 cms Note:Artist, poet and humanist, Rachel Berman is foremost an observer of life.  Berman’s search to observe and paint others is in fact, an exercise in introspection.  As Berman explains, “the paintings are autobiographical...they are about me, trying to find out who I am.”   Her works are melancholic with an anecdotal wit, while giving an empathetic voice to society’s marginalized.Rachel Berman began exhibiting in 1971, without any formal training in the arts.  Her work reflects her travels to Morocco, Paris, London, Ireland, New York and the people she met along the way.  Using house painting brushes that she trims down to size, she paints long, pronounced brushstrokes and has an affinity for earth tones.  When she completes a painting she then coats the canvas with beeswax and polishes it to a glossy finish.  Her attention to interiors and receding spaces combine with figures of Mannerist proportion to create compositions that leave the viewerwith a sense of existential angst.  One can see the influences of German Expressionism and artists such as Egon Schiele, Kathe Kolowitz and Francis Bacon.Estimate: $2,500–3,000
