Together 2 sheets Erläuterungen / Comments Dieses wichtige Grafikblatt Émile Bernards entstand in Pont-Aven nach August 1888, als sich der Künstler zusammen mit Paul Gauguin dort aufhielt und beide von der Landschaft und der Bevölkerung stark beeinflusst wurden. Es ist durch Signatur und Datum als Frühdruck ausgewiesen. Spätere Drucke wurden 1952 in einer Auflage von 200 Exemplaren von der Guilde de la Gravure in Genf publiziert. Nach Morane handelt es sich um eine fotomechanische Reproduktion, die meist von Hand koloriert wurde. This important print by Émile Bernard was created in Pont-Aven after August 1888, when the artist stayed there together with Paul Gauguin and both were strongly influenced by the landscape and the local people. It is identified as an early impression by signature and date. Later prints were published in 1952 in an edition of 200 copies by the Guilde de la Gravure in Geneva. According to Morane, these are photomechanical reproductions, usually hand-coloured.     BADENDE AM NILUFER Öl auf Leinwand. 86,5 x 66 cm. Rechts unten signiert „Emile Bernard“. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. An einem sonnig heißen Tag einige Badende und Sonnende am weiten Strand. Am unteren Bildrand eine liegende nackte junge Frau in Rückenansicht auf einem weißen Laken mit zwei langen geflochtenen braunen Zöpfen. Links neben ihr stehend eine junge nackte Frau in Frontalsicht, die nur ein weißes Tuch um Kopf- und Schulterbereich trägt. Sie hat ihren rechten Arm elegisch über ihren Kopf gelegt und blickt auf die Liegende herab. Zwischen den beiden eine weitere junge Frau in Rückenansicht, auf ihrem Haupt ein großes rosafarbenes Gefäß mit Tuchbedeckung und in ihrer rechten Hand ein weiteres Gefäß tragend. In der weiß aufgeschäumten Gischt am Strand ein Mann und eine Frau mit dunkelblonden Haaren in ein Gespräch vertieft. Besonders auffallend ist eine am Strand rechts sitzende ältere Frau in rotem Untergewand und einem schwarzen, über das Haupt gehenden Mantel. Im Hintergrund das hellblaue weite Meer mit einigen dunkelblauen Partien und weißen angedeuteten Wellen. Im Hintergrund links eine bewohnte Uferseite mit orientalischen Gebäuden und Palmen erkennbar. Im hellblauen Himmel lediglich eine große weiße Wolke zu sehen. Der französische Künstler wandte sich bewusst gegen den Impressionismus und entwickelte seinen eigenen Stil und seine Malerei, zu der, zusammen mit Gauguin, die Entwicklung der symbolistischen Malerei ab 1888 gehörte. Auf dem Gemälde die sitzende Dame in Schwarz weist auf diese Neuentwicklung hin. Das Gemälde wird dem Entstehungsjahr 1893 zugeordnet, der Zeit, in der der Künstler bis 1904 in Ägypten lebte und auch heiratete. Malerei in frischen hellen leuchtenden Farben.     Emile BERNARD (Lille 1868 - Paris 1941) The citadel of Cairo, annotated sketch Pencil and watercolor on two notebook pages 15 x 20.8 cm and 16 x 11 cm Signature stamp lower right of large sheet The citadel of Cairo, also known as Saladin's Citadel, dominates the city with the silhouette of Mehmet Ali's mosque, recognizable by its domes and minarets, an alabaster edifice completed in 1857; at the foot of the citadel stands the mosque of Sultan Hassan, a remarkable Mamluk construction from the XIVᵉ century (1356-1363). Commentary by Emile Bernard, Left: "Blue-green sky left tower old and dark red - center tower yellow-orange, right tower tarnished orange and salt-walls of the citadel honey-orange and purplish in the shadows very pink barracks the shadow of.... in the light, the golden golden, the minarets very bright in the light" on the right, it reads: "all the shadows of fine blue very blue sky and very light curling light and warm orange Emile Bernard (1868-1941) Associated with the Pont-Aven School, close to Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. In 1893, after Gauguin's departure for Tahiti two years earlier, E. Bernard decided in turn to leave for the Orient on what he hoped would be a short trip. He visited Samos, Smyrna (Izmir), Palestine and arrived in Alexandria and Cairo. He is seduced by the abstraction of Muslim and the everyday objects he depicts in his watercolors. He settled in Cairo in 1894 and stayed for ten years. He adopted the lifestyle and costumes of the and married Hanenah Saati, of Lebanese origin, on July 1, 1894. of Lebanese origin, belonging to the Syriac Orthodox community. He threw himself wholeheartedly into the quest for a classical, sublime, timeless ideal. "The East helped me to understand Antiquity, plastic beauty, Platonism, civilizations civilizations" (Emile Bernard, Confidences). He left Egypt for good in February 1904 and returned to France, leaving his wife Hanenah behind in Cairo. 16 x 11 and 15 x 21 cm An offset print by the artist, justified 4/100 lower left (28 x 38 cm), is included.

    (1868 Lille - 1941 Paris) Alter Steinbruch mit weidenden Kühen Impressionistische Landschaft von 1940 aus dem reifen Spätwerk des Künstlers, der zu den schillerndsten Figuren am Beginn der modernen Malerei gehört. Bernard lernte 1884-86 mit Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec im Atelier Fernand Cormons im Paris. 1886-1891 währte Bernards Künstlerfreundschaft und enge, fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit mit Paul Gauguin, die den Cloisonnismus, Synthetismus und Symbolismus entwickelten sowie Begründer der sog. Schule von Pont-Aven wurden. Im Winter 1886/87 in Paris begann überdies Bernards intensive Freundschaft zu Vincent van Gogh, dessen Tod ihn 1890 in eine tiefe Krise stürzte. 1893-1904 entfloh Bernard dem Wehrdienst durch Flucht nach Ägypten und kehrte erst 1904 nach Frankreich zurück. Im selben Jahr hielt er sich für einen en Monat bei Paul Cézanne in Aix-en-Provence auf, worauf sich ein lebenslanger Briefwechsel ergab. Öl/Lwd.; R. u. sign. u. dat. (19)40. 99,5 cm x 71 cm. Rahmen.
