Artist Oscar Edmund Berninghaus was born in St. Louis in 1874. His skill at sketching local events led to an apprenticeship in lithography and engraving when he was 16. Oscar Edmund Berninghaus, the painter, initially worked as a commercial artist for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, and it was in this context that he came to spend a week in Taos.
