Berry was intensely engaged with the effects of the apartheid system on South African society. This wide-angle shot was taken during a funeral oration for a 14-year-old girl shot by the police. Such occasions regularly led to confrontation between police and outraged mourners, and Tutu often tried to mediate between the hardened fronts in his riveting speeches. *Item is fully Taxed Deutsch: Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet 1989 von Pictorial Services Paris auf halbmattem "double-weight" Papier 50,5 x 60,5 cm, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. Vintage silver print 23,8 x 35,4 cm (9.4 x 13.9 in) Signed by the photographer in ink on the reverse, his copyright agency stamp on the reverse PROVENANCE directly from the photographer LITERATURE Ian Berry, Living Apart. South Africa under Apartheid, Phaidon 1996, p. 159. Magnum photographer Ian Berry has been exploring the effects of the apartheid system on South African society for more than sixty years. His photo features are contemporary documents of a country and its history - on the one hand they illustrate the complexity of ethnic and social segregation, on the other hand their dynamic visual idiom and their participatory gaze are convincing. For this image, Berry waited for the right moment to capture the gesture of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, which would become famous. Tutu's talent for captivating people of any background and conviction with his rhetoric made him one of the key figures in overcoming racial segregation. For his unflagging striving for reconciliation in his country, Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. The present photograph was taken with a Leica M2 (see lot 074) and a wide-angle lens in Transvaal (Gauteng) during a funeral eulogy for a 14-year-old girl shot and killed by the police. Such funerals regularly led to confrontations between the police and angry mourners and invariably had a political dimension. It was Tutu who regularly tried to intercede between the unrelenting parties, as Ian Berry's instantaneous shot impressively shows.
