            Johann Berthelsen ( 1883-1972) American

            Est: $3,500 - $4,500

Johann Berthelsen (American, 1883-1972) Oil painting, Signed Lower Right, Titled " Tree in Winter" measures (8 x 6) inches (20.3 x 15.2cm) He was born in Copenhagen in 1883, the 7th of seven sons, to Conrad and Dorothea Karen Berthelsen. The parents moved in artistic and professional circles. His father was a tenor with the Royal Opera and his mother was a nurse affiliated with a prominent physician. A year before Johann's birth, his parents visited the United States, but the marriage was in trouble and they returned to Denmark to divorce. In 1890, his mother brought the children to America, settling in Manistee, Michigan, with her sister's family. They would eventually live in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a city on the shore of Lake Michigan. As a teenager, Johann was actively involved in choirs and singing groups. And always, he loved to draw and paint. Though obviously intelligent and curious, he was too impatient to take well to schoolwork and never went beyond the 5th grade. It was not uncommon for boys to start working at an early age, and Johann tried several careers

Signed Johann Berthelsen Oil on Canvas Painting

            Est: $3,000 - $6,000

Signed Johann Berthelsen Oil on Canvas Painting of Empire State Under Snow Johann Berthelsen (1883-1972) was an American artist renowned for his impressionistic depictions of New York City streetscapes, particularly capturing the essence of the city during the early to mid-20th century. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Berthelsen immigrated to the United States with his family at an early age, settling in Chicago. Berthelsen's artistic journey began in the realm of music. He was a talented singer and initially pursued a career in opera, which led him to the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music. However, his artistic inclinations soon shifted towards painting, influenced by his interaction with various artists and exposure to different art forms. His art is characterized by a unique blend of impressionism and realism, with a focus on urban landscapes. Berthelsen was particularly captivated by New York City, which served as the primary subject for many of his works. He skillfully captured the vibrancy and dynamism of the city, often depicting iconic landmarks like Times Square, Central Park, and Fifth Avenue under various atmospheric conditions. His paintings of New York City are celebrated for their ability to evoke the mood and feel of the city, with particular emphasis on the interplay of light and shadow. Despite his focus on urban scenes, Berthelsen also painted serene landscapes and seascapes, showing his versatility as an artist. He was skilled in using oil as his primary medium, which allowed him to create rich textures and nuanced color palettes. Berthelsen's work gained considerable recognition during his lifetime and continues to be celebrated posthumously. His paintings are part of several major collections and have been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums. As an artist, Johann Berthelsen contributed significantly to the American art scene, leaving a lasting legacy through his captivating portrayals of New York City. Art: 20 x 16 in. Collection of Marianne Byrne and R. J. "Dick" Reynolds, Jr., Miami Beach, Florida. Estate of Marianne Reynolds. Acquired directly from the above by pre-arranged gift. Private Collection, New York. Note The present painting once belonged to Marianne Byrne O'Brien Reynolds, a dancer with Ziegfeld Follies, as well as on the Broadway stage in Joseph Fields The Doughgirls (1942), and featured in the movies The Very Thought of You (1944) and Cinderella Jones (1946). Byrne met her husband, tobacco heir R. J. “Dick” Reynolds, Jr. during a trip to Hollywood in 1943. The pair married the same year following Dick's scandalous 3 million dollar settlement. Marianne and R. J. Jr. maintained residences in Manhattan and the affluent Village of Bal Harbour on Miami Beach, FL. Active socially during Miami’s dynamic cultural and demographic transition in the 1970s and 1980s, Marianne, among her many other elite associations, was a member of the exclusive Bath Club on Collins Avenue. During their seven-year marriage (they divorced in 1952), Marianne and Dyck had two children. Their colorful, and mildly scandalous love story is told in The Gilded Leaf, centered around the R. J. Reynolds family, and co-authored by the couple's son Patrick C. Reynolds. Marianne passed away in her Bal Harbour home in 1985, and now rests in Woodside's Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum, in New York.
