His jockeys, endowed with a characteristic elegance and slenderness, move away from academicism to embrace an aesthetic close to expressionism, where the dynamism of the scene is translated into vibrant brushstrokes. The composition stands out for a studied chromatic contrast, which oscillates between atmospheres of leaden tones and the vivid intensity of the green of the racetrack, capturing with mastery the vigor and distinction of this sport. A painter, engraver and illustrator of Italian origin, Renato Berti consolidated a multifaceted career that ranged from portraiture and still life to the dynamism of his equestrian scenes and landscapes. His career was marked by a prolonged stay in Paris (1910-1938), the city that became his creative epicenter and where he achieved the prestigious status of associé and, later, sociétaire of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. With a constant presence in the Parisian Salons and competitions in Naples and Rome, Berti managed to merge the Italian pictorial tradition with the effervescence of the French school before his definitive return to Vicenza in 1938.

Depicted in this portrait is Alfred Kalley, a renowned jockey who made his mark on both French and English racecourses during the 1920s and 1930s. His name appears among the founding members of the Association des Jockeys, established on 5 April 1929 at the Maisons-Laffitte racecourse. Today, the Pat, Dick, Alfred and Willy Kalley prize, still awarded in Mont-de-Marsan, highlights the lasting legacy of this distinguished family of jockeys and horse breeders. Poised and self-assured, Kalley exudes in this portrait the confidence that comes with years of experience. He stands prominently against the bustling crowd of racegoers in the background, which the artist renders with a bold yet assured stroke. Published in the magazine L’Illustration in May 1937, this portrait solidified Berti’s artistic success, earning him an invitation to the Salon Hippique in 1938—his final exhibition in France. A defining moment in Renato Berti’s life and artistic career came in 1909 when he made the pivotal decision to relocate to Paris. He settled in a house-studio on rue Aumont-Thiéville, where he would remain for over three decades. Berti first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1911. He would continue to present his works there on a regular basis throughout his career until the late 1930s. Though living in the heart of Belle Époque Paris, the Paduan painter remained largely indifferent to the avant-garde movements of the time, instead immersing himself in the study of Cézanne and Post-Impressionism. Berti, a passionate equestrian, was fascinated by the graceful anatomy of horses. He was a frequent visitor to the renowned French racetracks of Auteuil and Longchamp in Paris, as well as the Deauville course in Touques, Normandy. These locations provided him with his greatest artistic inspiration, offering glimpses into the frenetic energy of race day, betting, the life of the jockeys and the stables.
