Harry Bertoia Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1915 - d. 1978

Harry Bertoia (March 10, 1915 – November 1978), was an Italian-born American artist, sound art sculptor, and modern furniture designer.

Bertoia was born in San Lorenzo, Pordenone, Italy. At the age of 15, given the opportunity to move to Detroit, Harry chose to adventure to America and live with his older brother, Oreste. After learning English and the bus schedule, he enrolled in Cass Technical High School, where he studied art and design and learned the skill of handmade jewelry making ca.1930-1936. At that time, there were three jewelry and metals teachers Louise Green, Mary Davis, and Greta Pack. In 1936 he attended the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, now known as the College for Creative Studies. The following year in 1937 he received a scholarship to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he encountered Walter Gropius, Edmund N. Bacon, Ray and Charles Eames, and Florence Knoll for the first time.

In 2019, the Harry Bertoia Foundation launched a catalogue raisonné project, which seeks to document and research the diverse and extensive artistic practice of the artist. The goal is to provide a comprehensive record and resource of Bertoia's work, and will include his painting, graphics (including monotypes), furniture, jewelry, metalwork, sound recordings, and sculpture. An ongoing project, the Harry Bertoia Catalogue Raisonné will be available online, published in stages, and regularly updated to reflect ongoing research. It will be accessible to scholars, educators, collectors, arts professionals, and any member of the public wishing to gain a deeper understanding of Bertoia's work. In 2022, the Nasher Sculpture Center's exhibition titled Harry Bertoia: Sculpting Mid-Century Modern Life became the first US museum retrospective of the artist's career in almost 50 years and the first to examine the full scope of Bertoia's broad and varied artistic practice.

Bertoia, Harry (1915-1978) Italian/American, Monumental 1960s Spray Steel Sculpture

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Bertoia, Harry (1915-1978) Italian/American, Monumental 1960s Spray Steel Sculpture. 1960s, stainless steel wire twisted and mounted into a silvered steel collar and mounted onto a stainless steel base. Provenance: From an East Coast Florida estate collection. Size: 5 x 5 x 29 1/2 in.  #5483 .  Harry Bertoia was born on March 10th, 1915 in San Lorenzo d’Arzene, Pordenone, Italy. At the age of 15 he moved to America, living in Detroit, Michigan with his older brother, Oreste. After teaching himself to speak English he attended Cass Technical High School, where he studied art and design and learned to make jewelry by hand by studying under three jewelry and metals teachers: Louise Green, Mary Davis, and Greta Pack. In 1936 he enrolled in the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, now known as the College for Creative Studies. The following year he received a scholarship to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he began to explore painting, graphics (including monotypes), furniture design, sound recordings, and sculpture, in addition to his first loves, metalworking and jewelry-making. By 1939 he was running the metal workshop there, working alongside Charles Eames and Edmund Bacon and becoming the head teacher of metalwork. When the war effort made metals rarer and more expensive he shifted to teaching jewelry and later graphic illustration. In 1943 he married Brigitta Valentiner, moving to California to work for Charles and his wife Ray-Bernice Kaiser Eames at the Molded Plywood Division of the Evans Product Company. A life-long student, Bertoia also learned welding techniques at Santa Monica College and began experimenting with sound sculptures. Bertoia worked there until 1946 when he took a position at the Electronics Naval Lab in La Jolla. In 1950 he was invited to move to Pennsylvania to work with Hans and Florence Knoll, fellow Cranbrook graduates.During this period he designed five wire pieces that became known as the Bertoia Collection for Knoll. Among these was the famous diamond chair, a fluid, sculptural form made from a welded lattice work of steel. Herman Miller eventually got Bertoia & Knoll to redesign the seat for them, but with a smoother edge using a thicker, single wire, the same way the chairs are still produced. By the mid 1950s the chairs had sold so well that Bertoia was finally able to devote himself exclusively to sculpture. He ultimately produced over 50 commissioned public sculptures, many of which remain viewable. In the 1960s he began experimenting with sounding sculptures of tall vertical rods on flat bases, culminating in roughly 100 “Sonambient” sculptures that he played in a number of recorded concerts for eleven albums in total. Bertoia was the sculptor commissioned to create the Marshall University Memorial Fountain in Huntington, West Virginia, to honor the university’s football team in the wake of the plane crash that killed them on November 14th, 1970. Bertoia died of lung cancer in Barto, Pennsylvania on November 6th, 1978 and is buried underneath one of the sculptural gongs he created. Today his incredibly innovative works are found all over the world in gardens, industrial parks, and other public spaces, with major displayed collections at the Addison Gallery of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Walker Art Center, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

  • Bertoia, Harry: Bushes
    Nov. 29, 2024

    Bertoia, Harry: Bushes

    Est: €300 - €400

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

    Bertoia, Harry: Mushroom

    Est: €300 - €400

- Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

  • Bertoia, Harry: Ohne Titel (Kopf)
    Nov. 29, 2024

    Bertoia, Harry: Ohne Titel (Kopf)

    Est: €4,000 - €4,500

Ohne Titel (Kopf) Monotypie auf Velin. Ende 1950er Jahre. 53 x 41 cm (56 x 45 cm). • Bertoia, Harry: Entwurf Metallobjekt
    Nov. 29, 2024

    Bertoia, Harry: Entwurf Metallobjekt

    Est: €300 - €500

Entwurf Metallobjekt Feder in Schwarz auf unregelmäßig imprägniertem Bütten. 1950er Jahre. 24,3 x 11 cm. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
