Measurements: 17.5 x 12 cm; 26 x 17 cm. Mariano Bertuchi was one of the great graphic chroniclers of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco and a privileged witness of the conflicts and transformations in North Africa in the first half of the 20th century. This collection brings together 86 original drawings that allow us to explore not only his extraordinary artistic ability, but also his documentary and journalistic view of the reality of his time. The collection includes portraits, landscapes and caricatures of some of the most important figures linked to the war and the political-military context of the time, drawn during his work as a correspondent in the Moroccan civil war. Of special relevance are several of the drawings preserved with handwritten annotations on the back, where one can still read the editorial indications of the newspaper for which they were made, as well as the references to the exact moment in which they were to be published. These details turn the collection into a testimony of the functioning of the illustrated press of the time and provide a documentary dimension of great historical value. On some occasions, moreover, it can be seen how the author himself reused papers from his daily environment as a support, among them an invitation to the Manila shawl dance held in San Lorenzo on August 12 at ten o'clock at night. Beyond its artistic quality, this set constitutes a unique historical document, capable of placing the viewer in the political, military and cultural context of colonial Morocco and Spain at the beginning of the 20th century. At the same time, it is evidence of its author's ability as a visual chronicler of his time, attentive both to the great historical events and to the everyday details that made up the social reality of the time. Mariano Bertuchi Nieto, known as "the great painter of the Protectorate" or "the painter of Morocco", developed a large part of his career in North Africa, where he captured an authentic and luminous vision of everyday Morocco, far removed from traditional orientalist clichés. Settled permanently in Tetouan since 1928 as Chief Inspector of Fine Arts of the Protectorate, Bertuchi portrayed souks, landscapes and popular scenes with a brushstroke close to impressionism, focused on capturing the atmosphere and the real identity of the North African populations. Trained in Granada and later in Madrid, he stood out from a very young age for his artistic talent. After his first trips to Morocco, he worked as a photojournalist of the Moroccan Civil War for La Ilustración Española y Americana, consolidating a close relationship with the Spanish military and colonial world in North Africa. Throughout his career he made posters, official paintings, institutional decorations and an intense teaching and cultural work in Ceuta, Tetuan and other cities of the Protectorate. Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and decorated in 1935 with the Order of Alfonso X the Wise, Bertuchi left an abundant production that today is preserved in museums and Spanish and Moroccan institutions, being considered one of the main visual chroniclers of twentieth century Morocco. Some of them have handwritten inscriptions. Several of the drawings are signed.

Conocida en 1925 como Cala del Quemado o Monte Malmusí (1927) la localidad cambia su nombre en 1927 a Villa Sanjurjo en homenaje al General José Sanjurjo tras la visita de Alfonso XIII. A partir de 1932 cambia su nombre a Alhucemas. En 1936 cambia de nuevo a Villa Sanjurjo. Los rifeños apodaban a la ciudad "Biya". La construcción y urbanización de la ciudad de la que esta obra es documento inestimable, corrió a cargo principalmente por militares ingenieros del ejército español (Jefatura de Ingenieros). Se construyeron pistas, caminos y otras infraestructuras similares bajo mando militar entre los que destacan las figuras del Comandante Edmundo Seco Sánchez (Pimer Interventor Civil y supervisor tras el desembarco de gran parte de la construcción y urbanización.), Alejandro Ferrant (Arquitecto de Obras Públicas y Minas), Leonardo Nieva ( que dirigió la prolongación de la vía ferroviaria Nador-Tistutin), Manuel Becerra Hernández (redactó los estudios para los ferrocarriles mineros de la región oriental) e ingenieros del Cuerpo de Zapadores que construyeron las primeras pistas y muelles en "Cala Quemado" tras el desembarco.

Bertuchi has collected a scene where the light gives the image a relaxed and soft atmosphere, presenting the subject in an idyllic way. Through the use of a fast and impostada brushstroke, the artist gives a great protagonism to the color, and to the light. Creating in the composition a play of light and shadows that manages to contextualize the viewer in that orientalist atmosphere. Known as "The great painter of the Protectorate" or "The painter of Morocco", Mariano Bertuchi is known for his pictorial style, the orientalism that was born in the nineteenth century as a result of the romantic spirit of flight in time and space.Bertuchi was trained in Granada, as a disciple of García Guerra and Larrocha, to later enter the School of Fine Arts. In 1895, when he was only eleven years old, he participated for the first time in an exhibition, and two years later he obtained the first award of his career. In 1899, at the age of fifteen and after his first trip to North Africa, Bertuchi presents three works in Granada and then moves to Madrid to continue his studies. That same year he presented his work in Madrid at the Biennial of the Círculo de Bellas Artes. From the beginning of the century Bertuchi attended the exhibitions of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and also showed his work in Granada. In 1903, when he was nineteen years old, he became a graphic reporter of the Moroccan Civil War, making ten oil paintings on cardboard that were published in "La Ilustración Española y Americana". In 1908 he returned to Malaga to make a series of paintings on military themes. Shortly afterwards he went to Melilla, then besieged by the imperial troops of the Sultan, to make a series of sketches of his camp. In 1911 he settled in San Roque, Cadiz, and two years later, before the Spanish troops entered Tetouan, he made sketches for his painting "Entry of H.I.H. the Khalifa Muley-el Medhi in Tetouan". In 1918 Bertuchi settles in Ceuta, and from his first years there he makes advertisements for the Ceuta-Tetuan Railway, a collaboration that will last twenty years. Also in this city he designs the sketches for the stained glass window of the main staircase of the City Hall, and paints a general view of Ceuta that is in the old mayor's office. In 1921 he paints for the African Casino of the same city a triptych dedicated to Commerce, Agriculture and Industry, and the following year he participates in the decoration of the Municipal Palace, executing the paintings of the Royal Sites that adorn the Throne Room. After several years in Ceuta, he finally settled in Tetuan in 1928, where he was appointed Inspector of the Fine Arts and Crafts Services of the protectorate of Morocco. By then he was already a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. He was also director of the Schools of Arts and Crafts of Tetuan and Targuist, as well as of the Moroccan Ethnographic Museum. In 1935 he received the Order of Alfonso X the Wise. Mariano Bertuchi is currently represented in various museums in Ceuta and several Moroccan cities.

Bertuchi) and Don José Antonio Pleguezuelos. Signed and located in the lower right area. Measurements: 27 x 22 cm; 34 x 30 cm (frame). Bertuchi has collected a scene where the pink light indicates that it is the first moments of the day. A light that gives the image a relaxed and soft atmosphere, presenting the subject in an idyllic way. Through the use of a fast and impostada brushstroke, the artist gives great prominence to color and light. Creating in the composition a play of light and shadows that manages to contextualize the viewer in that orientalist atmosphere. Known as "The great painter of the Protectorate" or "The painter of Morocco", Mariano Bertuchi is known for his pictorial style, the orientalism that was born in the nineteenth century as a result of the romantic spirit of flight in time and space.Bertuchi was trained in Granada, as a disciple of García Guerra and Larrocha, to later enter the School of Fine Arts. In 1895, when he was only eleven years old, he participated for the first time in an exhibition, and two years later he obtained the first award of his career. In 1899, at the age of fifteen and after his first trip to North Africa, Bertuchi presents three works in Granada and then moves to Madrid to continue his studies. That same year he presented his work in Madrid at the Biennial of the Círculo de Bellas Artes. From the beginning of the century Bertuchi attended the exhibitions of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid and also showed his work in Granada. In 1903, when he was nineteen years old, he became a graphic reporter of the Moroccan Civil War, making ten oil paintings on cardboard that were published in "La Ilustración Española y Americana". In 1908 he returned to Malaga to make a series of paintings on military themes. Shortly afterwards he went to Melilla, then besieged by the imperial troops of the Sultan, to make a series of sketches of his camp. In 1911 he settled in San Roque, Cadiz, and two years later, before the Spanish troops entered Tetouan, he made sketches for his painting "Entry of H.I.H. the Khalifa Muley-el Medhi in Tetouan". In 1918 Bertuchi settles in Ceuta, and from his first years there he makes advertisements for the Ceuta-Tetuan Railway, a collaboration that will last twenty years. Also in this city he designs the sketches for the stained glass window of the main staircase of the City Hall, and paints a general view of Ceuta that is in the old mayor's office. In 1921 he paints for the African Casino of the same city a triptych dedicated to Commerce, Agriculture and Industry, and the following year he participates in the decoration of the Municipal Palace, executing the paintings of the Royal Sites that adorn the Throne Room. After several years in Ceuta, he finally settled in Tetuan in 1928, where he was appointed Inspector of the Fine Arts and Crafts Services of the protectorate of Morocco. By then he was already a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. He was also director of the Schools of Arts and Crafts of Tetuan and Targuist, as well as of the Moroccan Ethnographic Museum. In 1935 he received the Order of Alfonso X the Wise. Mariano Bertuchi is currently represented in various museums in Ceuta and several Moroccan cities.
