Corona Imperialis Polyanthos (Kaiserkrone). Kupferstich mit zeitgenössischem Kolorit. 49,6 x 38,6 cm. Um 1613. Wz. Schlange am Stab. Die "Kaiserkrone", ursprünglich aus Vorderasien stammend und seit dem späten 16. Jahrhundert auch in Mitteleuropa beheimatet, ist ein Blatt aus dem berühmten „Hortus Eystettensis“, in dem Basilius Besler gewissermaßen die Schönheit der Schöpfung in Gestalt von Pflanzen feiert. Ganz ausgezeichneter Druck mit reichem Kolorit, mit schmalem Rand um die Plattenkante. Geringe Gebrauchsspuren, unten hinterlegter horizontaler Einriss nahe der Plattenkante, recto jedoch kaum wahrnehmbar, minimale Randläsuren, verso umlaufend braunes Klebeband, sonst sehr gut erhalten. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Basilius Besler (German, 1561-1629) "Martagon Imperiale" Embellished Engraving Late 19th-early 20th century, German A large hand painted embellished engraving titled "Martagon Imperiale" (Martagon Imperiale Moschatum or Turk's Cap Lily) by Basilius Besler (German, b. 1516 d. 1629) from his book "Hortus Eystettensis" (published first 1613). Basilius Besler's Martagon imperiale (specifically Martagon Imperiale Moschatum) is a standout botanical study illustration of the Turk's Cap Lily from his 1613 masterpiece, Hortus Eystettensis. Featured in the "Summer" section of the book (notably on Plates 181, 182, and 184), these engravings are celebrated for depicting the flowers at their actual life size, showcasing their distinctive recurved petals and spotted patterns with scientific precision. Originally commissioned to document the gardens of the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt, these plates marked a shift from medicinal "herbals" to high-end botanical art. Faint plate mark along bottom. Work is housed in a gilt and textured wood frame. Cataloguer's Note: Basilius Besler (1561–1629) was a respected German apothecary, botanist, and artist from Nuremberg, primarily celebrated for producing the Hortus Eystettensis (1613), the most magnificent botanical work of its time.

Besler's work, which depicted over 1100 specimens, is still widely considered one of the best botanical works ever created. Most of the plants depicted were drawn at their actual size. The first edition of the work was printed in 1613 and consisted of only about 300 copies. Hortus Eystettensis is truly a masterpiece and one of the most comprehensive and alluring botanical works ever produced. In the preface to an 1806 edition, Franz Seraph Widmann said ?...by reason of...the magnificence of its engravings, [this work] deserves to rank high among the rarest works of its kind."
