    Leon Bibel (1912-1995) 1938 The striking composition on canvas with the Statue of Liberty beyond an assemblage of abstracted figures is signed and dated lower left. This modernist composition with its bold, flattened figures in protest poster-like quality was painted during the period when Leon Bibel was working under the New York City WPA Federal Art Project. As a painter, printmaker and sculptor Leon Bibel focused on genre subjects of Social Realism highlighting the struggles of workers, and the politics of protest during the Great Depression. By some reports, Bibel was himself arrested for protesting cuts to the Federal Art Project. A few years after this canvas was painted, Bibel took to poultry farming because, as he put it, .'we wanted to eat.' It wasn't until around 1960 that he would resume painting. Canvas measures 30 x 24 with a framed size of 37.25 x 31.25 inches.     Leon Bibel (1912-1995) Harlem River Bridge Circa 1938 The social realist cityscape is signed along the lower edge, to the left of center. It is a classic WPA-era depiction rich with narrative and movement in the manner that Bibel was known for. He also painted pictures that highlighted the struggles of workers, and the politics of protest during the Great Depression. By some reports, he himself was arrested for protesting cuts to the Federal Art Project. Beginning in 1936, Leon Bibel lived and worked in New York as a WPA artist with the Federal Art Project at the Harlem Community Art Center.     LEON BIBEL (1913-1995) Food Not Cannon . Etching. 190x151 mm; 7 1/2x5 7/8 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately 12. Signed in pencil, lower margin. 1937. A very good impression of this scarce proof-like etching. Bibel was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco with his family. He studied at the California School of Fine Arts before moving to New York in 1936 to work for the Federal Arts Project. He worked as a WPA artist for nine years as a Federal Arts Project muralist and a WPA Arts Project administrator. When the program ended, he moved to New Jersey with a group of artists who became chicken farmers. George Segal (1924-2000) was among the group of artists and they formed a close friendship. Exhibited: Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature, University of Richmond Museums, Richmond, Virginia, Leon Bibel: Art, Activism, and the WPA, September 19 - November 11, 2013. Leon Bibel enroled in the CCC, and was stationed at Fort Winfield Scott, a training and supply facility active from 1933-39. Upon completion of his training and service on the labor division of the New Deal, he enrolled in the Mural Division of the WPA.

    LEON BIBEL (1913-1995) G.W. Bridge. Lithograph. 300x237 mm; 11 7/8x9 3/8 inches, full margins. Edition of 25. Signed, dated, titled and inscribed "/10" in pencil, lower margin. 1938. A very good impression. Bibel was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco with his family. He studied at the California School of Fine Arts before moving to New York in 1936 to work for the Federal Arts Project. He worked as a WPA artist for nine years as a Federal Arts Project muralist and a WPA Arts Project administrator. When the program ended, he moved to New Jersey with a group of artists who became chicken farmers. George Segal (1924-2000) was among the group and they formed a close friendship.
