About Cándido Bidó

  • Artist name: Cándido Bidó

  • Alias: Cándido Bidó Ventura

  • Profession: Painter

  • Nationality: Dominican

Cándido Bidó was a Dominican painter best known for his use of bold colors and linework to depict the people - primarily women - that surrounded him. A small, haloed sun often appears in the background of his works, and many critics describe his colors as “sun-hot.” Born and raised in the city of Bonao, he intended for his paintings to represent the lifestyle of - and relationships between - his loved ones and neighbors. Notable among Bidó’s works is his 1964 painting Peinandose, which depicts two young women combing their hair over bowls.

Bidó eventually moved to Santo Domingo to work at the Serafín de Asís College, and soon enrolled in the National School of Fine Arts. At the National School of Fine Arts, Bidó was mentored by Jaime Colson, Gilberto Hernández Ortega, and José Gausachs Armengol. While studying there, Bidó also formed the art group ‘Los Tres’ with fellow painters Elsa Núñez and Leopoldo ‘Lepe’ Pérez. Upon graduating in 1962, he became an art professor at the school, moving up the ranks and eventually being promoted to faculty professor in 1967. He continued working as a professor there until 1981.

Bidó later founded Santo Domingo’s Cándido Bidó Art Center and School of Arts of the Dominican Air Force, as well as Bonao’s Cultural Center Plaza. Many of his paintings are currently on display in Santo Domingo’s Museo Galería de Arte Moderno.
