Max Bill Doublement 7 Messingstäbe, verchromt / 7 brass rods, chrome-plated 1969 26x36x28 cm / 26x36x28 cm Signatur / Signature Seitlich auf einem Stab graviert "Max Bill "Doublement"/ Éditions Denise René 1969 / 128/200" Engraved on the side of a rod "Max Bill "Doublement"/ Éditions Denise René 1969 / 128/200" Zustand / Condition Kleine unauffällige Bestossung an einem der Stäbe. In ausgezeichneter Erhaltung Small unobtrusive bumping on one of the rods. Max Bill is one of the founders and main representatives of Concrete Art. His work was shaped by the Bauhaus idea of the unity of all the arts and a form appropriate to function and material, with the means being autonomous and bearers of the artwork’s meaning, which refers only to itself. As with the present small-format sculpture, in which the beams cross a central core, Bill’s works are produced in a clear and comprehensible manner. The title "Doublement" soberly reflects the construction principle of the sculpture. In ausgezeichneter Erhaltung Minor unobtrusive bumping at the edges of the individual bars. Max Bill’s work is distinguished by a clear formal language and precise proportions. He aimed to create forms that visually embodied the new physics of the early 20th century and produced objects that enabled a sensual understanding. His sculptural works testify to his exceptional skill in the field of geometric abstraction. Bill was a founder of Concrete Art, and his theoretical writings had a major influence on Swiss graphic design of the 1950s. Juni 2007, Los 167, dort erworben von Privatsammlung Schweiz Auction Sotheby's, Zurich, 5 June 2007, lot 167, acquired there by Private collection Switzerland Zustand / Condition Auf originalem Chassis, in der alten Nagelung, stellenweise mit Krakelüren. In sehr guter Erhaltung On the original stretcher, in the old nailing, with craquelures in places. Characteristic of Max Bill’s work is the precise engagement with form and proportion, with mathematical structures having developed into a central design element. In his compositions, Bill used polygonal surfaces, which he assembled into balanced yet dynamic pictorial structures. The present painting is a particularly successful example of this. Four square surfaces set at an angle form the compositional core and are complemented by eight adjoining isosceles right-angled triangles. Through this clear geometric construction, a harmonious interplay between the surfaces and the colours emerges. The finely tuned palette of grey, white, pink, and blue lends the composition an impressive lightness and elegance. MAX BILL (Switzerland, 1908 - Germany, 1994). "Geometric composition", 1979. Silkscreen, issue 42/66. Editions Club Eude 99. Signed, dated and justified in pencil. Measurements: 65 x 50 cm (paper); 77.5 x 62 cm (frame). Painter, sculptor, architect and graphic, typographic and industrial designer, Max Bill began his training at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, where he studied goldsmithing and was influenced by Dadaism and Cubism. Between 1927 and 1929 he completed his training studying art at the Bauhaus in Dessau, and there he approached the functionalism of design by the hand of Kandinsky, Klee and Schlemmer. After finishing his studies he settled in Zurich, and in 1930 he created his own architecture and graphic design studio, dedicating himself in parallel to painting. In 1931 he adopted Theo van Doesburg's theory of concrete art, according to which it is possible to achieve universality through clarity. The following year he began his sculptural activity, joining the Abstraction-Création (until 1937) and Allianz groups, as well as joining the Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne and the UNion des Artistes Modernes in Paris. In 1944 he expanded his activity to industrial design, within a rationalist style. In 1951 he founded the HfG school in Ulm, of which he became the first rector. Throughout his career he received important awards, such as the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1951 and the First International Prize at the São Paulo Biennial in the same year, as well as being named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He is currently represented at the MoMA in New York, the Kunstmuseum in Basel, the Fine Arts Museum in Bilbao, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Daimler Chrysler Collection in Berlin and many other collections, both public and private.
