Alois Binder customarily painted only German character portraits, the bulk of which were genre men in Bavarian costume and/or Bavarian tavern portraits (e.g. The Newspaper Reader, Merry Drinkers, The Cigar Smoker, Portrait of Cigarettes smoking farmers, The Bavarian Couple, Merry Zecher, Portrait of a Bavarian Beauty, The Rich Uncle, A Toast, The Politician, and so forth).
