WERNER BISCHOF (1916–1954) | Bharat-Natyam dancer Anjali Hora getting ready for a performance, Bombay 1951 Image size: 20.3 x 19.9 cm English Gelatin silver print, printed c. 1960 on single-weight glossy paper, in very good condition. Photographer's Magnum stamp and "John Hillelson" agency stamp on the reverse. LITERATURE Marco Bischof/Simon Maurer/Peter Zimmermann (eds.), Werner Bischof. Bilder, Bern 2006, p. 200. On the occasion of his LIFE reportage on the famine in Bihar, Bishof also pursued other projects. For example, several Magnum members in 12 countries had been working since the early 1950s on documentaries about the circumstances and dreams of post-war youth (the catchphrase "Generation X" came from Robert Capa; when first published in Holiday Magazine, however, the photo essay appeared under the title "Youth of the World"). Bishop accompanied a young Indian man and a young Indian woman in their everyday lives for his essay "India's Generation X", this beautiful print originates from it. Deutsch Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet c. 1960 auf dünnem, glänzendem Papier, in sehr gutem Zustand. Rückseitig Magnum-Fotografenstempel und "John Hillelson" Agenturstempel. LITERATUR Marco Bischof/Simon Maurer/Peter Zimmermann (Hg.), Werner Bischof. Bilder, Bern 2006, S. 200.

WERNER BISCHOF (1916–1954) | Courtyard of the Meiji shrine, Tokyo, Japan 1951 Image size: 20.1 x 19.8 cm English Gelatin silver print, printed c. 1960 on single-weight glossy paper, in good condition. Photographer's Magnum stamp and "John Hillelson" agency stamp on the reverse. LITERATURE M. Bischof, R. Burri, W. Bischof. 1916-1954. His Life and Work, London 1990, p. 162-163. Werner Bischof was given the assignment of photographing the war in Korea in 1951. The job took him through Japan for almost a year, discovering the country's beauty and purity of design and ritual that must have reminded him of his early studio days. His time in Japan undoubtedly marks a high point in Bischof's oeuvre. The subject matter and the photographer's sensitive, considered approach complement each other perfectly. Photographer Martin Parr said of this image of the snowy Meiji shrine: "It's one of those images that enters our subconscious and just stays there." Deutsch Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet c. 1960 auf dünnem, glänzendem Papier, in gutem Zustand. Rückseitig Magnum-Fotografenstempel und "John Hillelson" Agenturstempel. LITERATUR M. Bischof, R. Burri, W. Bischof. 1916-1954. His Life and Work, London 1990, S. 162f.

WERNER BISCHOF (1916–1954) | Skull of a bison, Switzerland 1941 Image Size: 30,5 x 24 cm English: Vintage silver print on single-weight glossy Agfa-Brovira paper, in very good condition. Photographer's credit stamp and his handwritten address in Zurich, as well as titled in German "Schädel eines Bisons" in ink on the reverse. PROVENANCE Collection of Lou Parella, co-editor of "U.S. Camera" magazine. LITERATURE Marco Bischof, Simon Maurer et al. (eds.), Werner Bischof. Bilder, Zurich 2006, ill. 29; Werner Bischof, 24 Bilder, portfolio ed. by L.M. Kohler, Bern 1947, n. p. Before Werner Bischof turned to photojournalism after the Second World War, he devoted himself to studio work as a fashion and advertising photographer and, as a freelancer, primarily to still lifes. Until the 1940s, his work was characterised by calm, formally perfect images in which the design principles of his teacher at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts, Hans Finsler, continued to have an impact. From 1942, Bischof published his first pictures in the monthly magazine "Du", including this impressive shot of a bison skull on a sandy ground, which also appeared in the "U.S. Camera". The enigmatic shadow and the footprint recognisable in it reveal the influence of Surrealism; the print on offer is a rare collector's item. * Vollbesteuert

WERNER BISCHOF (1916-1954) Courtyard of the Meiji Shrine, Tokyo, Japan. Silver print, the image measuring 9¾x11¾ inches (24.8x29.8 cm.), with Bischof's credit stamp and numeric notations in pencil on verso. 1951 Provenance: Acquired in 1960 by the editor of the Bantam edition, New York "Priests of the modern Meiji Temple, which was built to honor the emperor who opened Japan to Western influence. Wearing ancient robes and headdresses, they have been to open the temple gates to members of the Imperial Family, who are to be honored on the occasion of Meiji's anniversary celebrations." - Werner Bischof and Robert Guillain, Japan (Simon & Schuster, 1954) In the summer of 1951, Werner Bischof was assigned to photograph the war in Korea. The journey took him to Japan, where American soldiers were sent on leave. Japan captivated him and after completing his assignment in Korea, he devoted a year to pursue his own aesthetic research on capturing Japan's incommensurable beauty, but also fascinating ability in skillfully oscillating between traditional preservation and modernized ways of live. This iconic picture was taken in the winter of 1951 on a snowy day while Bischof was visiting the garden of the Meiji Shrine. Bischof died tragically in a road accident in the Andes on May 16, 1954, where he was engaged in making a film. His photographs of Japan were posthumously published in a book entitled Japan, 1954 written by Robert Guillain, a French journalist, and later in a paperbound edition by Magnum.
