James Stewart Blackton (American, 1875-1941) The Steamship Leonard J. Busbyoil on panelsigned Blackton, lower right5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. The Leonard S. Busby was an iron screw steamer launched in 1894. She foundered near Hudson, New York on January 13, 1935. The vessel was named for industrialist and financier Leonard J. Busby (1846-1908), who served as president of the Staten Island Milling Co., director of R.S. Holt & Co. flour exporters, and director of Corn Exchange Bank.

One painting is titled on the back as "Original no. 525 Fisherman's Home Venice by Stuart Blackton." Both are signed in the lower right corners. Oil on stretched canvas, mounted in ornate golden wood frames. Blackton is famously known as the "father of American Animation" and was a pioneer in the film industry in the Silent Era, founding Vitagraph Studios. Dimensions are 25 in h x 18 in w x 2.5 in d and 20.75Â in h x 26.75 in w x 2.5 in d. Condition is very good with some wear to frames and a few small pieces missing in frame molding. J. STUART BLACKTON New York/California/England, 1875-1941 The Morgan Line steamer El Rio. Signed lower left "J. Stuart Blackton 73 E. 120 St. N.Y.". The El Rio was built at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia, in 1899. For a time she held the speed record between New York and New Orleans. She was lost in a collision off Brazos in 1945. Antonio Jacobsen also painted a portrait of the ship. Oil on board, 12" x 18". Framed 17" x 23".
