In dialogue with the realism of Pop Art, he developed his own visual language during the 1960s, dedicated to the faithful depiction of popular motifs drawn from everyday American life. The American art world showed considerable interest in these hyperrealistically rendered subjects—above all, his paintings of chrome motorcycles attracted widespread attention—and major museums soon began acquiring his works for their collections. Blackwell used photographs as source material and visual references for his large-scale paintings. Art dealer Louis K. Meisel coined the term “Photorealism” for this artistic movement and became its leading advocate, representing many of its principal artists in his gallery, including Tom Blackwell. The aim was the most exacting and detailed possible rendering of reality as perceived. Blackwell brought this mode of painting to perfection. His artistic concerns centered on the interplay of light and shadow as well as reflections across surfaces. As a master colorist, he also explored tonalities and subtle gradations of color in his paintings. Particular attention was devoted to the spatial relationships of depicted subjects within the pictorial field, a concern intensified through the motif of reflection. In the later stages of his career, his storefront-window paintings developed into highly complex compositional and visual structures, where reflections in the glass intertwined the interior world of display windows with the exterior life of urban streetscapes. The painting Sequined Mannequins, depicting a display window of the New York luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan, captures reflections of city life in the shop window and thereby preserves the highly aesthetic still image of a fleeting moment. Reality and illusion blur in this outstanding example of the American artist’s work. Complex structures, spatial interweavings, the interplay of light and shadow, and the nuanced coloration testify to Tom Blackwell’s exceptional painterly mastery, continually inviting the viewer to discover new details.
