Roland Auctions NYSisson Blanchard (1929-1981) Haitian. Blanchard was encouraged to paint by the American sculptor Jason Seley. His works are are characterized by boldness, using bright primary colors. Signed. Sisson Blanchard was born in Trouin, a small village in the mountains of southern Haiti. He came to Port-au-Prince as a young man and got a job as a yard-boy. In 1948, Sisson was given painting materials and soon began selling his work to the Centre d'Art. Sisson Blanchard arranges figures, fish, birds, animals, vegetables and flowers in orderly columns or disorderly groups. His paintings are original and bold and after more than 50 years, are feeling more and more uplifting and wonderful. Overall Size: 26 1/4 x 38 1/4 in. Sight Size: 23 1/4 x 35 in.

Migrating to Port-au-Prince, Blanchard found work as a gardener at the Centre d'Art. He began painting in 1948, with the encouragment of the American sculptor Jason Seley. Blanchard's paintings of birds and farming scenes were first shown at the Centre d'Art, and have since been exhibited all over the world. His work is included in the collections of both the Davenport Museum of Art and the Waterloo Museum of Art, in Iowa. His son, Smith Blanchard also became a prominent Haitian painter. Austin Auction GalleryThis is an oil on board by Sisson Blanchard, a Haitian artist who was known for his paintings of birds and farm scenes. He was born in Tourin, migrated to Port-Au -Prince, and began painting in 1948, with the encouragement of Jason Seley, an American sculptor who worked in Haiti. His works were first shown at the Centre d'Art in Haiti and later all over the world. His son is Smith Blanchard, a prominent Haitian painter. The painting here is very large, compared to other pieces by the artist, and it depicts several roosters and chickens. It is signed in the middle near the bottom. The overall size is 59 1/2 x 67 in. wide and the sight size is 24 x 29 1/2 in. wide. Provenance: the Hirsch estate.
