      Dwight Blaney (American, 1865-1944), The Meadow oil on canvas, signed and dated 1918 at lower left, presented in a period gilt frame. Stretcher 26 x 22 in.; Frame dimensions 29 3/4 x 25 3/4 in. Dwight Blaney studied at the Boston Art School from 1886 to 1888. In 1891, at the encouragement of his friend, John Singer Sargent, Blaney traveled to Europe to paint. After two years abroad, Blaney returned to the states, settling in Boston and spending much time on Ironbound Island, Maine.       DWIGHT BLANEY Wooded Beach Scene. Watercolor on thick, cream wove paper, 1924. 355x508 mm; 14x20 inches. Signed and dated in watercolor, lower right recto. Blaney (1865-1944) was an architect, painter and noted antique collector born in Salem, Massachusetts. After marrying an heiress to the Eastern Steamship Company, he purchased Ironbound Island, near the social and artstic epicenter of Bar Harbor, Maine. Artists that visited Blaney''s private island included Childe Hassam, Frank W. Benson, William MacGregor Paxton and even John Singer Sargent, who produced a group of paintings and sketches during one of his stays there in 1922.

Housed in a fine period carved wood and gilt frame by Foster Bros. Makers, Boston, Mass. The back of the frame having an inset 2" dia. brass framers label, also impress mark "50 632". The frame retaining an original Newton Centre Woman's Club exhibit label with title, artist, etc. SIZE: 34-1/2" x 27-1/2".
