(Vienna 1845–1916) An Alleyway in Venice, signed T. Blau, oil on panel, 40 x 19.8 cm, framed Provenance: Gustav Pisko, c. 1896; Sale, Neumeister, Munich, 19 September 1990, lot 429; Private Collection, Austria; Sale, Hassfurther, Vienna, 29 May 2008, lot 18; Collection of Antal Post de Bekessy; Sale, Sotheby’s, Paris, 20 December 2017, lot 106; Kunsthandel Giese & Schweiger, Vienna; Private Collection, Austria. Catalogued and illustrated in: Tina Blau online catalogue raisonné, Belvedere Research Center Vienna, cat. raisonné no. GE 290. The present painting depicts a narrow alley in Venice, which is narrowed by tall, densely packed walls on both sides. The vertical format reinforces the impression of the narrow alley and leads the viewer's gaze between the buildings upwards, where a strip of blue sky opens. A clothesline stretches across the alleyway, on which bright blue fabrics hang, creating a colour contrast in the otherwise ochre and brown tones of the painting. The people walking in the alleyway are depicted in loose, sketchy brushstrokes. In the winter of 1876, she travelled to Venice for the first time, where she stayed until the beginning of the following year. And she captured the magic of the lagoon city in her work. In the spring of 1879, she embarked on her second trip to Italy. This took her via Venice and Rome to Naples. The extended stays in Rome and Venice offered her the opportunity to engage intensively with the changing atmospheres, the southern landscapes and the Italian cities. Numerous impressions of Italy influenced her artistic work, which resulted in a lighter colour palette and the tones became brighter to capture the light and shadow. Tina Blau's trips to Italy held a special place in her life and took the artist to landscapes and cities that had fascinated painters for centuries.
