DIE AUFERWECKUNG DES LAZARUS Öl auf verso beschliffenem Holz, doubliert auf Platte. 37,3 x 21,7 cm. Gemälde nach dem Original von Abraham Bloemaert; die Komposition stammt von einem Kupferstich von Jan Müller (um 1593). Der Standort von Bloemaerts Original-Ölgemälde ist nicht bekannt. Die Auferweckung geht auf das Johannesevangelium (Joh 11,5-45) zurück. Im Zentrum des Gemäldes der stehende Jesus in rotem Gewand und blauem Mantelüberwurf sowie mit einem Strahlennimbus um sein Haupt, mit ausgestrecktem Arm und Segensgestus. Er schaut herab auf den am Boden liegenden, in weiße Tücher gehüllten Lazarus, den er gerade zum Leben erweckt hat. Neben Lazarus, der Jesus mit vorsichtig zusammengelegten Händen anblickt, das tieferliegende Grab und der zur Seite geschobene Sargdeckel. Zahlreiche Jesus umgebende Figuren wohnen dieser Auferstehung bei. (1481275) (18)

Abraham Bloemaert (1566-1651) The Judgement of Paris Oil on canvas Abraham Bloemaert (Gorinchem, 1566 – Utrecht, 1651) was a central figure in Dutch painting between the late 16th and mid-17th centuries. Son of the sculptor and architect Cornelis I Bloemaert, he trained in Paris between c. 1581 and 1585, where he absorbed the Mannerism of the School of Fontainebleau. In 1593 he returned to Utrecht, where he settled permanently, becoming the city's most important painter and one of the most influential masters of his time.\n\nIn the early phase of his career, Bloemaert was one of the principal exponents of Mannerism in the Northern Netherlands, with dense compositions and expressive anatomies that reveal the direct influence of Bartholomeus Spranger — the reason why the present painting was originally attributed to this artist. From c. 1610, his style evolved towards a more classicising approach and, in the 1620s, he began to integrate elements from Caravaggio's painting. Bloemaert's work is represented in collections such as the National Gallery in London, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen.\n\nThe present composition is catalogued by Marcel Roethlisberger in the artist's catalogue raisonné (Abraham Bloemaert and his Sons, Doornspijk, 1993, no. 17) and probably dates from the early Mannerist period, c. 1592–1595. Koesen-Leemans, Valkenswaard (Pays-Bas), en 1965, selon le RKD ; Vente anonyme ; Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 14 novembre 2006, n° 61 (vendu 72.000 €) ; Acquis lors de cette vente par l'actuel propriétaire Abraham Bloemaert aborde ponctuellement le thème de la vanité par le biais de la peinture 1, du dessin 2 et de la gravure 3. Peintre catholique dans un milieu fortement protestant, Bloemaert nous offre ici une composition plus originale et complexe figurant saint Jérôme priant en arrière-plan. Saint Jérôme, père de l’Eglise, se retire dans le désert syrien puis part pour Rome en l’an 382 où il devient l’un des familiers du pape Damase. Ce dernier le charge de traduire la Bible en latin, tâche à laquelle il consacre sa vie. Sa version de la Bible, appelée « Vulgate » est reconnue comme la version officielle de l’Eglise par le concile de Trente. Ce personnage docte, patron des érudits, inspire Abraham Bloemaert à plusieurs reprises tant en peinture qu’en dessin 4. Marcel Roethlisberger, dans l’ouvrage qu’il dédie aux travaux d’Abraham Bloemaert et de ses fils, mentionne une autre composition représentant saint Jérôme lisant avec une vanité qu’il donne à Hendrik Bloemaert (c. 1601-1672) 5, mais dont il ne connaît qu’une photographie. 1.Vente anonyme ; Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Mes Ricqlès et Maigret, 9 juillet 2020, n° 174 (vendu 33 488€). 2. Plusieurs dessins de sa main représentent un putto accompagné d’un sablier et d’un crâne : chez Joseph Fach à Francfort et au musée de Philadelphie (inv. n° 1984-15-1). 3. Le graveur Jan Saenredam interprète par ailleurs au burin une composition d’Abraham Bloemaert au crâne (nous renvoyons à l’épreuve conservée au Rijksmuseum d’Amsterdam, RP-P-OB-10.533). 4. ANBETUNG DER KÖNIGE Öl auf Leinwand. 179 x 229 cm. Wiederholung bzw. Nachschöpfung des großformatigen Gemäldes „Anbetung der Magier“ von 1624 (168,8 x 193,7 cm), das sich im Centraal Museum in Utrecht befindet. Das vorliegende Werk im Vergleich zum Utrechter Bild etwas größerformatig. Es zeigt die biblische Szene großfigurig, die Figuren an den Betrachter nahe herangeführt. Maria in rotem Kleid und blauem Mantel, links sitzend vor einem Scheunengebäude mit Bretterdach. Das Kind auf dem Schoß, das sich dem ältesten der drei Könige zuwendet. Dieser verbeugt sich in Ehrerbietung, gekleidet in einen goldfarbenen Chormantel mit Hermelinkragen, in der Hand den goldenen Kelch mit Goldstücken als Gastgeschenk. Dahinter die beiden weiteren Könige, der Dunkelhäutige mit einem goldenen Prunkgefäß sowie ein weiterer Bärtiger mit breitrandigem Hut und Zackenkrone. Der Kopf dazwischen ist möglicherweise als Selbstportrait des Künstlers zu deuten. In der entsprechenden Vorzeichnung von 1625, die sich ebenfalls im Centraal Museum befindet, ist dieses Gesicht in Umrissen gegeben. Von größerem Interesse ist auch, dass sich in vorliegendem Werk zum rechten Bildrand hin drei weitere Köpfe befinden: ein dunkelhäutiger Mann mit Turban und Straußenfedern, eine Figur mit hellbraunem Hut und eine Frauenfigur – wiederum Gestalten, die sich in der Utrechter Fassung nicht befinden. Der Selbstbildnischarakter des Kopfes zwischen den beiden Königen erhärtet sich im Vergleich mit einem Stich von Johannes Meyssens (1612-1670): dieses wohl nach dem Portraitbildnis von Hendrick Bloemaert (Auktion Lemperz 2011), das den Maler in fortgeschrittenerem Alter zeigt, jedoch mit gleicher physiognomischer Charakteristik. The painting on offer for sale in this lot is larger than the Utrecht painting. The head between the two kings appears to have the style of a self-portrait and this is enforced when comparing the painting with an engraving by Johannes Meyssens (1612-1670): it probably shows a portrait of Hendrick Bloemaert (Auction Lempertz 2011), showing the aged painter, however, with the same physiognomic features.
