      JAN BLOM, THE HORTI FARNESIANI IN ROME, Oil on canvas (relined), 124 x 165 cm Provenance Galerie für Alte und Neue Kunst Alexander Gebhardt, Munich, 1973. - Private collection, West Germany.Certificate Walther Bernt, Munich, 9.8.1973.German catalogue text:Über den holländischen Maler Jan Blom weiß man nicht viel mehr, als dass er 1622 in Amsterdam geboren und 1685 ebendort gestorben ist, und dass er 1662 sein Haus an Johannes Lingelbach verkauft hat - eine auch in kunsthistorischer Hinsicht durchaus interessante Tatsache. Sein Œuvre ist recht klein, nur etwas mehr als eine Hand voll Werke sind bekannt, unter anderem eines im Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck. Jan Blom, dies zeigen die wenigen Werke, spezialisierte sich auf die Darstellung von Villen und Gärten, und die Gemälde mit italienischen Motiven lassen vermuten, dass er eine Reise nach Italien unternommen hat. Dieses großformatige Gemälde zeigt die Horti Farnesiani, die von Vignola für Kardinal Alessandro Farnese, den großen Mäzen, Sammler und Bauherren auf dem Palatin errichtet wurden. Am linken Bildrand sieht man das mit dem Kardinalshut bekrönte Lilien-Wappen Alessandro Farneses. Der rechte Vordergrund wird beherrscht von wuchernden Pflanzen, die fast gänzlich den Brunnen mit Figurenschmuck überdecken - man sieht Sonnenblumen und Stockmalven, Primeln und Disteln, Salbei und Goldblumen, Mohn, Wucherblumen und Zitronen und vieles mehr. Die Gartenarchitektur selbst sowie die eleganten Figuren treten gegenüber den Pflanzen fast in den Hintergrund, was ungewöhnlich ist für Jan Blom. Dass die Pflanzen eine solch prominente Bedeutung in diesem Gemälde erhalten, hängt damit zusammen, dass die Horti Farnesiani auch einen berühmten botanischen Garten umfassten. Wie erwähnt spezialisierte sich Blom auf die Darstellung italienischer Villen und Gärten mit eleganter Figurenstaffage, wie sie auch in diesem Gemälde zu sehen ist. Es ist bekannt, dass Blom mit Künstlern wie Johannes Lingelbach zusammenarbeitete, die die Figuren malten, und es ist zu fragen, ob dies auch bei diesem Gemälde der Fall ist.
