Abraham Danielsz Hondius (1631 - 1691) Stiring up the swans. Oil on canvas. H 74cm W 116cm. Hondius, born Rotterdam and trained under Pieter De Bloot (1601-1658) He migrated to London in 1666 leaving behind the Dutch republic and its decling art market. Although painting many landscapes and portraits Hondius specialised in animal works, we demonstrate the complexity of animal painting. This work depicting two dogs chasing the geese and ducks, reflects the skill in painting movement of the animals. Hondius is represented in the British Museum, The Victoria Albert Museum, The Met New York, The Rijks Museum Amsterdam and many important private collections.
