Peter Blume (27 October 1906 - 30 November 1992) was an American painter and sculptor. His work contained elements of folk art, Precisionism, Parisian Purism, Cubism, and Surrealism.

Blume, born in Smarhon, Russia (present-day Belarus) to a Jewish family,[2][failed verification] emigrated with his family to New York City in 1912; the family settled in Brooklyn.[1] He studied art at the Educational Alliance, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and the Art Students League of New York, establishing his own studio by 1926.[3] He trained with Raphael Soyer and Isaac Soyer, exhibited with Charles Daniel, and was patronized by the Rockefeller family.[4] Blume married Grace Douglas in 1931; they had no surviving children.[1] In 1948, Blume was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member, and became a full member in 1956.

        Est: -

Peter Blume (1906 - 1992) "Drawing For From The Metamorphoses" Charcoal & Conte on Paper. Noted for his surrealist- tinged figuration called 'magic realism', Peter Blume remained outside any clearly defined current of American art, and throughout his sixty year career rarely veered from the quirky narrative style he developed in his twenties. During the 1930s and 1940s the popularity of Blume's dreamlike paintings, filled with obsessive detail, made him one of America's best-known artists. Two of his major works are the powerful antifascist Eternal City (1934-37) held by the Museum of Modern Art, and The Rock (1945-48), at the Art Institute, Chicago. Peter Blume (American, 1906-1992) Autumn Signed and dated 1984 bottom right, signed again, dated, titled and copyrighted verso, oil on canvas. 45 1/4 x 50 in. (114.9 x 127cm) provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania. note: Upon his death at the age of eighty-six, Peter Blume was hailed as a 'painter of dreamlike narratives' whose 'obsessively detailed images made him one of this country's best-known painters in the 1930s and 40s' by The New York Times. An ardent admirer of Renaissance technique, Blume's highly detailed paintings have been described as combinations of various art movements, including Surrealism, Cubism, Precisionism, and Purism, the latter being associated with a style of painting which emphasizes contours and simple shapes. This amalgamation of styles in Blume's work has sometimes been labeled as magic realism, in which familiar objects are rendered in meticulous detail-sometimes heavily shadowed, as with the harvested vegetables in the foreground of the present work-and placed in surreal or fantasized spatial relationships. In many of Blume's figurative works, objects have been visibly altered in scale. Even before fully developing his quirky, iconic style, Blume was somewhat of a prodigy, studying with famed American realist painters Isaac Soyer and Raphael Soyer, patronized by the Rockefeller family, and exhibiting with the art dealer Charles Daniel by the age of nineteen. Blume's painting South of Scranton won first prize at the Carnegie International Exhibition, Pittsburgh, while two of Blume's best known paintings are in major public collections: Eternal City, originally shown at the Julian Levy Galleries, New York, and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, and The Rock, in the Art Institute of Chicago.

An admirer of Renaissance technique, Blume worked by drawing and making compositional cartoons before putting his work on canvas. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1932 and spent a year in Italy. His first major recognition came in 1934 with a first prize for South of Scranton at a Carnegie Institute International Exhibition. The painting was inspired by a trip across Pennsylvania in an old car that required frequent repair. Eternal City [1934-1937] was politically charged, portraying Benito Mussolini as a jack-in-the-box emerging from the Coliseum; as a one-man, one-painting exhibition, it excited considerable attention from critics and audiences. Signed soft-cover catalog of his paintings & drawings, publ. 1964, 26pp, plus many more pages of illustrations. About 7.5 x 10. Signed inside on flyleaf - bold signature.
