  • Peeter Boel, circle of, Wild boar hunting with a beater and a hunting dog
    May. 21, 2026

Peeter Boel, circle of, Wild boar hunting with a beater and a hunting dog

    Est: €15,000 - €20,000

This impressive painting was auctioned in Amsterdam in 2004 alongside its counterpart, an equally large painting depicting a pack of dogs chasing a wild boar from the opposite direction. Whilst the latter is unequivocally attributed in the RKD databases to the Flemish animal painter Pieter Boel, our painting is listed there as ‘attributed’. At the 2004 auction, it was ascribed to Carl Borromäus Ruthart, who was born in Gdańsk and was also active in Antwerp during the second half of the 17th century. A similar painting by Peeter Boel is held in the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich (Inv. No. 5516). This painting also depicts a young huntsman with his hunting dogs.

STILLLEBEN MIT NAUTILUSPOKAL UND PFIRSICHEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 54,5 x 72 cm. In vergoldetem Prunkrahmen. The present painting is evidence of Boel’s talent as a still life painter; he created several masterpieces of the 17th-century Flemish school, such as the monumental Allegory of the Vanities of the World held at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Lille.

'Dulwich Picture Gallery: Complete Illustrated Catalogue by Richard Beresford', Londra 1998, p. 42- M. Jonker and E. Bergvelt, 'Dutch and Flemish paintings: Dulwich Picture Gallery', Londra 2016, p. 34).

Pieter Boel (also Peeter Boel) (Flemish, 1626-1674), hand colored etching, ca. mid 17th century CE. A beautiful etching with hand coloring from the Baroque period depicting a genre scene of a horseman with two horses. Boel specialized in still lifes and animal paintings. He was quite a pioneer of the latter in that he worked with live animal models in their natural environs as opposed to the stuffed specimens that his contemporaries used. As a result, his works were praised for their natural poses and realism - quite refreshing compared to the relatively static animal studies of his day. Though Flemish by birth, Boel moved to Paris where he became painter to the king and had many admirers. Size: 5.25" W x 4.125" H (13.3 cm x 10.5 cm); 12" W x 9.875" H (30.5 cm x 25.1 cm) including mat Provenance: private Lucille Lucas collection, Crested Butte, Colorado, USA All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
