Ferdinand Bol (1616–1680) Etching. ca. 1635–1640. The scene shows a seated older man with a long beard and headgear, his hands clasped over a book, with a trefoil on his chest. The loose but controlled lines, the strong light-dark effect and the contemplative posture are closely related to Bol's early etching, which originated during his training in Rembrandt's studio. MNR 493). Öl/Lwd., doubliert; R. ob bez. u. dat. "AETATIS SV(A)E (/) 38: AN(N)O (/) 1646". 59 cm x 49 cm. Rahmen. Circle of Ferdinand Bol (1616 - 1680). Oil on relined canvas. Inscribed and dated "AETATIS SV(A)E (/) 38: AN(N)O (/) 1646".

  • Ferdinand Bol, Vertumnus and Pomona
    Nov. 22, 2025

    Ferdinand Bol, Vertumnus and Pomona

    Est: €30,000 - €40,000

Despite the imposing presence of this painting since the 19th century, when it appeared in the Sedelmeyer Gallery in Paris attributed to Rembrandt, until its last sale in New York in 2010, no definitive attribution has been found. Prominently exhibited as a work by Ferdinand Bol at the 1939 World's Fair in New York and acquired a few years later by collector Frederick W. Schumacher, it was bequeathed by him to the Columbus Art Museum, Ohio. After Blankart described it in his catalogue raisonné on Ferdinand Bol as ‘an early painting or close to his style,’ it was sold from the Museum in 2010. Ferdinand Bol depicted the theme in another, later painting (now in the Cincinnati Art Museum) and in two drawings (Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and Princeton Art Museum). All three compositions differ significantly from one another. Fred G. Meijer has seen the original painting and also believes that it could be an early work by Bols or that it was created in his immediate circle. The subject of this painting comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The Roman God Vertumnus, disguised as the talkative old woman, attempts to seduce the reclusive woodland nymph Pomona. Netherlandish painters favored this classical story in the 1600s because of its moralizing lessons on the dangers of gullibility.

ATTRIBUTED TO FERDINAND BOL (DORDRECHT, 1616-1680, AMSTERDAM)

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

ATTRIBUTED TO FERDINAND BOL (DORDRECHT, 1616-1680, AMSTERDAM) ATTRIBUTED TO FERDINAND BOL (DORDRECHT, 1616-1680, AMSTERDAM) Portrait of a Gentleman pen and brown ink and brown wash, with framing lines in brown ink, on laid paper 6.1 x 7.2 cm. (2 1/2 x 2 7/8 in.) Provenance Private collection, England; Anonymous sale, Chorley’s Auctioneers, Prinknash Abbey Park, Gloucestershire, 25 July 2023, lot 720 (as 'Dutch School, 18th Century'). The tentative attribution of the present sheet to Ferdinand Bol is based on stylistic and technical similarities with a handful of small-scale portrait drawings by the artist, notably a drawing of a man in the collection of the Ossolineum in Wroclaw, Poland, which is in turn a study for Bol’s half length painted Portrait of a Man, signed and dated 1647, in the Staatliche Museum in Schwerin. Other comparable drawings by Bol include 'A Scholar Seated in his Study' in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich, 'An Old Man Seated at a Table', also in Munich, and a 'Young Woman Playing the Lute' in the Liberna Collection at the Draiflessen Collection in Mettingen, Germany. We are grateful to Martin Royalton-Kisch for his first-hand study of the present sheet and his assistance in determining its tentative attribution to Bol. Dr. Royalton-Kisch has dated this drawing to c.1635-1642; a time in which Rembrandt had a large number of pupils and assistants working in his style, of which Bol was among the most gifted.

  • Ferdinand Bol - Old Man with a Leaf of Trefoil - Rembrandt Circle
    Apr. 17, 2025

Ferdinand Bol - Old Man with a Leaf of Trefoil - Rembrandt Circle

    Est: €320 - €460

This etching catalogued by Bartsch as Rembrandt (II.115.38) is nowadays regarded as a work by one of the pupils. It shows an old bearded man with a leaf of trefoil on his coat, seated on a chair and reading a large book, and was attributed by Rovinsky to Jan Lievens (1607-1674). Now it generally considered as the work of another pupil of Rembrandt: Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680). This etching on very thin paper is an impression from the original plate and likely from the Mc Creery edition of 1816.
