ATTRIBUTED TO FERDINAND BOL (DORDRECHT, 1616-1680, AMSTERDAM)

    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

ATTRIBUTED TO FERDINAND BOL (DORDRECHT, 1616-1680, AMSTERDAM) ATTRIBUTED TO FERDINAND BOL (DORDRECHT, 1616-1680, AMSTERDAM) Portrait of a Gentleman pen and brown ink and brown wash, with framing lines in brown ink, on laid paper 6.1 x 7.2 cm. (2 1/2 x 2 7/8 in.) Provenance Private collection, England; Anonymous sale, Chorley’s Auctioneers, Prinknash Abbey Park, Gloucestershire, 25 July 2023, lot 720 (as 'Dutch School, 18th Century'). The tentative attribution of the present sheet to Ferdinand Bol is based on stylistic and technical similarities with a handful of small-scale portrait drawings by the artist, notably a drawing of a man in the collection of the Ossolineum in Wroclaw, Poland, which is in turn a study for Bol’s half length painted Portrait of a Man, signed and dated 1647, in the Staatliche Museum in Schwerin. Other comparable drawings by Bol include 'A Scholar Seated in his Study' in the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich, 'An Old Man Seated at a Table', also in Munich, and a 'Young Woman Playing the Lute' in the Liberna Collection at the Draiflessen Collection in Mettingen, Germany. We are grateful to Martin Royalton-Kisch for his first-hand study of the present sheet and his assistance in determining its tentative attribution to Bol. Dr. Royalton-Kisch has dated this drawing to c.1635-1642; a time in which Rembrandt had a large number of pupils and assistants working in his style, of which Bol was among the most gifted.

EXHIBITED: Royal Academy of Arts, London, "Exhibition of Dutch Art, 1450-1900," 1929, no. 146, included in the exhibition catalogue, p. 22 (as Bol); City of Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester, "Dutch Old Masters," 1929, no. 3 (as Rembrandt); Frank T. Sabin Gallery, London, "Gems of Painting," 1937, no. 4 (as Rembrandt); Frank T. Sabin Gallery, London, "Summer Exhibition," 1953 (as Rembrandt). LITERATURE: C. F. De Groot, Catalogue of Dutch Painters, London, 1916, p. 414, no. 911 (as Rembrandt). One of Rembrandt's most notable pupils, Ferdinand Bol strongly reflects the master's style in the present work, executed early on in Bol's career. This overlap is doubtless a major factor in the varied attribution of the work, which vacillated between Rembrandt and Bol for the better part of a century. The "Rembrandt" signature which appears faintly at upper right is believed to have been added within a century of the work's completion. This portrait is an excellent case study in the difficulties with Old Master attributions, perhaps best highlighted by how, in 1929, the work was exhibited at a Royal Academy exhibition at Burlington House as by Bol, and later that very same year shown at the City of Manchester Art Gallery as by Rembrandt. It's possible that the work was cleaned during this time, revealing the spurious "Rembrandt" signature, though there is presently no record of such an event. The present attribution has been confirmed through careful examination by the consensus of three preeminent scholars of Dutch painting: Dr. Albert Blankert, expert on Ferdinand Bol and author of the catalogue raisonné, Dr. Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann, professor emeritus and former member of the Rembrandt Research Project, and Dr. Otto Naumann, expert and dealer in the art of the Dutch Golden Age. While some question has been made of the authorship of the figure's claw-like proper right hand, the lack of retouching visible under ultraviolet light in this area suggests instead that it has not been reworked. Rather, it appears the hand is true to life, having been disfigured as the result of an accident or the ravages of old age. HID01801242017
