Oil on panel. Dimensions: 21.5 × 14 cm. Signed on the reverse. An important preparatory study for the celebrated Portrait of the Marchesa Franzosi, painted by Giovanni Boldini in 1892, now an oil on canvas (116 × 86 cm). Executed with a rapid, vibrant, and extraordinarily confident brushstroke, this sketch reflects the creative process of one of the most prestigious portrait painters of the Belle Époque, capturing with great spontaneity the pose, psychology, and character of the model before the execution of the final composition. The formal synthesis, the freedom of the line, and the refined chromatic sensitivity demonstrate Boldini's unmistakable style, whose painting revolutionized European aristocratic portraiture through a dynamic, elegant, and highly modern approach. This work is of considerable historical and artistic interest, documenting an essential phase of the painter's creative process and bearing a direct relation to one of his best-known compositions from the late 19th century. Giovanni Boldini (Italian/ French, 1842-1931). Paying a Call. Gouache and watercolor, signed "Boldini" lower left, (7.75 x 5.5 inches, sight). Frame: H: 12.375 in., W: 10.125 in., D: 1 in. Patrick Roberts (1950-2021) was a collector and preservationist of industrial age technology artifacts, as well as specialized areas in American history and fine art. He was the founder and director of the American Museum of Industry and Technology located in New Preston, Connecticut. The museum was a non-profit organization, essentially a private holding entity for Robert's extensive collections with assets estimated at over 9.3 million in 2016. Upon his death, his large estate not only included specialized industrial machinery and equipment, but 19th and early 20th century works of art by artists such as John Marin and Edward Hopper.

L’artista affida la costruzione della scena alle sue inconfondibili pennellate sciolte e frustate: tocchi rapidi, obliqui, talvolta quasi graffiati, che frantumano la superficie pittorica in un concerto di vibrazioni luminose. La prospettiva, volutamente sghemba, introduce un senso di instabilità controllata che rende la veduta dinamica anche in assenza di figure umane. Il selciato, reso con colature e striature di colore, sembra riemettere la luce dei lampioni in riflessi umidi, come se la pioggia fosse appena cessata. Le scie giallo-arancio dell’illuminazione urbana evocano quella Londra moderna e abbagliante che, non a caso, guadagnò nel tempo il soprannome di città delle luci. Pur nella sua quiete, il dipinto vibra dell’energia della metropoli: un’immagine che parla soprattutto attraverso luce, materia e ritmo pittorico.

È noto per la sua straordinaria capacità di spaziare tra diversi generi pittorici, sebbene abbia raggiunto l'apice della sua fama come ritrattista ufficiale dell'élite parigina. Parigi fu il luogo in cui la sua arte maturò e dove il suo stile acquisì quell'inconfondibile impronta dinamica e vibrante che lo ha reso celebre. Non a caso, la Ville Lumière, con la sua frenesia, le sue mode e le sue icone, trovò in Boldini il suo cantore ideale. Durante gli anni 1880 e 1890, mentre la sua carriera di ritrattista cresceva costantemente, l?artista realizzò anche numerosi dipinti a olio più intimi, con una marcata componente erotica. L'opera in esame ne è un esempio lampante: le pennellate rapide e sicure, i cosiddetti 'colpi di frusta', conferiscono movimento e vita al soggetto. La modella, languidamente sdraiata su una poltrona in una posa seducente, crea una tensione erotica con l?osservatore. L?incontro di Boldini con i grandi nomi dell'Impressionismo, come Manet, Sisley e Degas, affinò ulteriormente la sua sensibilità per il colore e il movimento, elementi che caratterizzano il suo stile unico ed inconfondibile.
