David Bomberg Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1890 - d. 1957

David Garshen Bomberg (5 December 1890 – 19 August 1957) was a British painter, and one of the Whitechapel Boys.

Bomberg was one of the most audacious of the exceptional generation of artists who studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks, and which included Mark Gertler, Stanley Spencer, C.R.W. Nevinson and Dora Carrington.[1] Bomberg painted a series of complex geometric compositions combining the influences of cubism and futurism in the years immediately preceding World War I; typically using a limited number of striking colours, turning humans into simple, angular shapes, and sometimes overlaying the whole painting a strong grid-work colouring scheme. He was expelled from the Slade School of Art in 1913, with agreement between the senior teachers Tonks, Frederick Brown and Philip Wilson Steer, because of the audacity of his breach from the conventional approach of that time.[2]

Whether because his faith in the machine age had been shattered by his experiences as a private soldier in the trenches or because of the pervasive retrogressive attitude towards modernism in Britain Bomberg moved to a more figurative style in the 1920s and his work became increasingly dominated by portraits and landscapes drawn from nature. Gradually developing a more expressionist technique, he travelled widely through the Middle East and Europe.

From 1945 to 1953, he worked as a teacher at Borough Polytechnic (now London South Bank University) in London, where his pupils included Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff, Philip Holmes,[3] Cliff Holden, Edna Mann, Dorothy Mead, Gustav Metzger, Dennis Creffield, Cecil Bailey and Miles Richmond.[4] David Bomberg House, one of the student halls of residences at London South Bank University, is named in his honour. He was married to landscape painter Lilian Holt.

▲ David Bomberg (1890-1957) View of Ronda signed and dated 'Bomberg 54' l.l., charcoal and pastel 24 x 42cm David Bomberg made several significant trips to Ronda, Spain, profoundly influencing his artistic work. His first visit to Spain was in 1929, where he spent six months in Toledo, drawing inspiration from the high sun and weathered hilltop townscape. Bomberg returned to Spain with his future wife, Lilian Holt, in 1934 and 1935, spending time in Ronda and Asturias. Ronda, perched high in the Andalusian mountains and divided by a dramatic gorge, captivated Bomberg. He described Ronda as 'the most interesting of the towns of Southern Spain'. The town's extraordinary landscape, with its ancient city on a glowing rock, inspired the artist. He explored the area on a donkey, finding vantage points to study and paint the remarkable town. Bomberg's final visit to Ronda was between 1954 and 1957. His drawings and paintings from this period are characterised by structured brushstrokes capturing the unique topography. In the present lots, we see Bomberg's ability to translate the slopes, buildings and skies into richly graded monotone effects. Sworders are pleased to offer examples from both his 1930s and 1950s visits in this sale. Condition Report: Framed: 48.5 x 66.5cm A little cockling and slight time staining. Not viewed out of glazed frame.

David Bomberg,  British 1890-1957 -  Farm Field, Talgwyn, Red Wharf Bay, 1944;  oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right 'Bomberg 44' and bears inscription with title on the reverse of the stretcher, 58.5 x 76 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  with Boundary Gallery, London (by repute);  private collection, London, purchased in 1983  Note:  the owner of the work was a close friend and client of Agi Katz, founder and director of Boundary Gallery, who specialised in the work of David Bomberg and other Jewish and émigré artists in Britain; Rosebery's were responsible for selling her Estate in 2022. The work is listed in an inventory made by Agi Katz of the owner's collection.  Made towards the end of the Second World War, Bomberg visited Angelsea with his family in 1944, making a number of works of Talgwyn Farm as a respite from the more urban works he had been making. Richard Cork has described these as showing his 'impulsive emtional reaction to the landscape'. This followed an important commission for the War Artists Advisory Committee in 1942 to paint an underground bomb store at RAF Fauld in Tutbury, creating a small body of works that were highly abstracted and almost geometric in form. Bomberg would make more trips across the UK in 1946, making a series of similarly expansive landscapes of Cornwall, Devon and Scotland. These landscapes present a renewed engagement with nature itself and a large number of these are now in public collections including 'Evening, Cornwall, 1947' (Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry), 'Bideford, Devon, 1946' (Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter) and a related Welsh landscape, 'Talgwyn Farm, Red Wharf Bay, Anglesea, 1944' (The Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth).  David Bomberg was a member of the Whitechapel Boys. He studied at the Slade School of Art under Henry Tonks, and alongside artists such as Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson, and Paul Nash. He was awarded the Slade Prize for drawing in 1913, after which he travelled to France, meeting contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani. In 1914 he co-curated an exhibition with Jacob Epstein, in which his works were shown alongside those of Modigliano, Kisling, and other prominent Jewish artists living in France.  His first solo exhibition was held at the Chenil Gallery in 1914, where visitors included Augustus John, Marinetti, Duchamp and Brancusi. Bombergs work has been the subject of a number of solo exhibitions, including at the Israel Museum in 1983, at the Tate in 1988, and at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1979 when under the directorship of Nicholas Serota. His works are currently held at MoMA in New York, the Art Institute in Chicago, the Tate in London and National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh.

λ DAVID BOMBERG (BRITISH 1890-1957)STUDY FOR THE PALESTINE RESTORATION FUND POSTER Ink, watercolour and wash 39.5 x 26.5cm (15½ x 10¼ in.)Executed in 1923. Provenance:The artist's familyD. Mole Davies-Rees, Private Collection Denys Wilcox Fine Art/Court Gallery, Somerset Exhibited:Chichester, Pallant House Gallery, Bomberg, 21 October-4 February 2017, travelling exhibition to Newcastle, Laing Art Gallery; London, Ben Uri Gallery until September 2018 (lent to the exhibition by the Court Gallery)Literature:MacDougall, Sarah; Dickson, Rachel, Bomberg (London: Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, 2017), no. 62, p. 105 Like many others, Bomberg found himself unsettled in the aftermath of the First World War. Support from The Tate in 1923 through the Duveen Drawings Fund saw two works by Bomberg enter the permanent collection boosting morale to the struggling artist. Nonetheless, it was his friendship with Muirhead Bone, whom he had met through the Canadian War Memorial Project, which spearheaded Bomberg's involvement within the Zionist movement. Artists such as Jacob Kramer following the 1917 Balfour Declaration were employed as official artists to produce works in support of the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. However, despite Bone's support of Bomberg and negotiations with Leonard Stein, the political secretary of the Zionist Organisation Bomberg was turned down as an official artist. Bone persisted and managed to arrange a commission from the Palestine Foundation Fund (Kere Heyesod) who were focused on recording 'Zionist Reconstruction.' With financial support from Bone, Bomberg and his wife arrived in Jerusalem in 1923, via Alexandria and Jaffa. Bomberg was immediately struck by the contrast between the architecture of Jerusalem in both the modern and historic quarters set against the dramatic landscape. This fascination with the landscape continued over the coming years whilst Bomberg studied the Judean Hills trekking into the desserts of Petra and Jericho. Bomberg lived in the Old City of Jerusalem looking out across to the Mount of Olives. It is possible that this present study for the Palestine Restoration Fund Poster was produced before Bomberg arrived in Jerusalem as a sample to illustrate his skills for the Zionist Organisation, which he was eventually turned down from. Comparisons have been drawn to a design for Coterie Magazine that Bomberg produced in 1919, depicting a lone figure constructed of angular lines set against a composition of geometric shapes. This work was in fact never published. The present lot is filled with a subdued colour palette with earthy tones of brown and mauve possibly inspired by the rich soil and landscape of Jerusalem. The lone figure fills the left side of the composition, the right arm stretched high above their head to read the proclamation. A beacon of light shines brightly overhead representing hope.
