Bonfils, Felix (1831-1885) Souvenir d' Orient, album of photographs. Alès, France: Privately printed by the author, 1878. Oblong quarto; illustrated with 100 albumen prints pasted two to a sheet, with printed titles and interleaving description pages; bound in red morocco-backed pink cloth, decorated and lettered in gilt, printed floral endpapers, all edges gilt (leaves waved; minor closed short tears to a few leaves at stubs; rubbed, hinges starting); 11 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. Felix Bonfils, of the prolific Maison Bonfils photography studio, was one of the first photographers to produce images of the Middle East for mass distribution. He and his family would often travel to Beirut, where they set up a studio that became known for its landscapes, portraits, and elaborately posed dramatic scenes. Today, their photographs are housed in many illustrious collections such as London's British Library, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco.

Albumen prints (4), forming a four-part panorama, images overall measuring 200 x 1030 mm, flush mounted to modern archival boards. The panorama dates to around 1865-70, still showing the 13th-century Frankish bell tower on the Acropolis which was demolished in 1875, as part of works by the Greek authorities to display the classical monuments in something like their original setting. Although not signed, this photograph is likely to be the work of FÃ©lix Bonfils (1831-1886). For comparison, see the Athens panorama attributed to Bonfils in the collection of the Prentice and Paul Sack Photographic Trust of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, ref. ST1998.0067.C This view was taken from a view point just below the National Observatory. The Athenian Acropolis, one of the most famous landmarks of Ancient Greece, has been an important cultural and religious location since the 3rd millennium BCE. The most prominent building on the Acropolis, the Parthenon, was constructed between 447 and 438 BC as a temple to Athena, although it eventually went on to serve as both a Christian church and a Muslim mosque. All photographs are signed on the plate "Bonfils". Felix Bonfils [1831-1885], greatest photographer of 19th century Eretz Israel. “What sets Bonfils’ work apart is the rare quality of the photographs. Even the most sterile landscape becomes a work of art through the uncompromising angle of the shot” [Early Photographs of Eretz Israel edited by Eli Shiller and Menachem Levine, p. 92]. In the introduction to the album ‘Souvenirs d’Orient’ (published in 1877 and was one of Bonfils’ most famous publications including hundreds of original photographs from Eretz Israel and the East), the president of the French Society of Literature and Science writes: "The photographs of F. Bonfils are among the greatest achievements of our generation... The man who took on a large-scale work did an invaluable service to science while taking countless risks and arduous labor ...". Same size: 28x23 cm. Some mounted on stiff backing for preservation. Overall good condition.
