    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Pierre Bonnard (French 1867-1947) Salon des Cent, 23 Exposition poster 1896. Original vintage antique French Lithograph Exposition Poster. The drawing of a woman admonishing her dog appears only half-finished, with the right side remaining a blank, but all the pertinent elements are there – the fashionable veiled hat, the gesture of the gloved hand, and the attentive pose of the pooch. This charming invitation is surely one of the finest and most sensitive lithographs of Bonnard and of the entire Salon des Cent series. Sight size 24 x 17 inches.

Insgesamt in sehr guter Erhaltung All sheets fresh in colour and uniform in the original paper formats. Individual sheets with occasional paper inclusions and tiny foxing. The present complete series of the artist's main graphic work was published in 1899 by Ambroise Vollard in Paris and is very rarely found in such fine condition. Together with the almost simultaneously published series of Parisian city scenes by Édouard Vuillard, also published by Vollard, the series represents a milestone in the history of colour lithographs around 1900. Bonnard's series with Parisian themes was shown to the public for the first time in the year of printing, in the rooms of the art dealer Vollard on Rue Laffitte. With this series, Bonnard created an impressive portrait of urban life by day and by night. Among other things, he depicted boulevards with strolling people and passing horse-drawn carriages, lively urban canyons and rows of houses, as well as other aspects of urban and bourgeois life, such as a market scene or a filled theatre hall with festively dressed visitors. Bonnard masterfully succeeded in exemplarily capturing the bustling activity of the French metropolis in a wonderful and impressive manner. • Pierre Bonnard, Salon des Cent. 1896.
    Jul. 30, 2026

Pierre Bonnard, Salon des Cent. 1896.

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Pierre Bonnard 1867-1947 Salon des Cent. 1896. Condition A-: minor overpainting and restoration at side margins. Bonnard designed only six posters. His first, France Champagne in 1891, was a revolutionary image, displaying the influence of the Ukiyo-e Japanese prints and opening up horizons for the new generation of poster artists. "The central element of this highly modern composition, in which the large area of blank paper creates a vacuum, is the woman who is depicted only in outline - with details provided only at the top of her dress and the rendering of her head . . . The monogram, in the form of a butterfly, pays tribute to Japanese art and balances the composition" (Salon des Cent p. 35). Her attention (and that of the viewer) is drawn to the charming little dog. Wember 137, DFP-II 79, Salon des Cent 5, Bouvet 39, Art Nouveau p. 85, Abdy p. 82.

  • Pierre Bonnard, La Revue Blanche vintage poster
    Jul. 21, 2026

Pierre Bonnard, La Revue Blanche vintage poster

    Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Pierre Bonnard La Revue Blanche vintage poster 1894 31.5 h x 24.375 w in (80 x 62 cm) Bonnard's best-known and most enigmatic poster advertises the monthly La Revue Blanche, published by his close friends the Natansons. The significance of this image eludes us today and seems not to have been all that clear when published. Maindron admitted that he could not understand it, but found that "nonetheless it's quite curious." Bouvet attempts an analysis: "The strange form [at right] apparently following the young woman, is in fact a man, seen from behind, an opera hat on his head and coat collar turned up, reading the poster for the Revue on the wall" (p. 30). The design itself is quite ahead of its time, creating a geometric pattern out of other posters for the publication, while simultaneously contrasting the sassy pose and voluptuous costume of the female reader against the grisly nature of the street urchin-cum-newsie to her right. Imp. Edw. Ancourt, Paris Literature: Marx, p. 32; Bouvet, 30; DFP-II, 77; Ives, 151; Maitres, p. 38; Word & Image, p. 26; Modern Poster, p. 8; Reims, p. 234; Posters of Paris, p. 8; PAI-LXXX, 237 This work will ship from Chicago, Illinois.
