Bonnat 12.99 x 8.66 in. 33 x 22 cm Provenance : Vente anonyme ; Toronto, Waddington's, 12 juin 2025, n° 71 ; Acquis lors de cette vente par l'actuel propriétaire En 1868, Léon Bonnat accompagne Jean-Léon Gérôme lors d’un long voyage en Égypte et en Terre Sainte. Ils sont rejoints par un groupe d’artistes et d’écrivains, dont le photographe de l’expédition, Albert Goupil, fils du marchand d’art de Gérôme, Adolphe Goupil, ainsi que Willem de Famars-Testas, dont les notes et croquis abondants qui furent publiés par la suite sont une source d’information précieuse sur ce périple. Le groupe quitte Marseille pour Alexandrie, puis se rend au Caire et à Suez. Ils mettent ensuite un mois pour rejoindre le monastère Sainte-Catherine, dans le Sinaï, avant de continuer vers le nord, visitant Pétra, Aqaba, le désert du Néguev, la Judée, pour enfin atteindre Jérusalem le 3 avril 1868. De nombreuses œuvres, peintures, dessins et photographies furent produits par ces artistes au cours de ce voyage. Naturellement, la ville trois fois sainte n’échappa pas à leurs coups de pinceau et c’est ainsi que nous connaissons une petite série de quelques rares peintures réalisées sur le vif par Léon Bonnat à Jérusalem. Notre tableau, récemment redécouvert, constitue un ajout important à cet ensemble. Il se distingue par un cadrage tout à fait singulier et une découpe de la composition résolument moderne. La présence des petites fleurs très finement exécutées dans le bas et au pied de l’olivier, vient casser l’aspect visuel très synthétique du tableau, préfigurant presque les Nabis les plus radicaux. Léon BONNAT (1833-1922) Christ on the cross Gouache on strong paper, small stitches and small lack at the corners, very slight scratches. 31.5 x 22.1 cm Very beautiful gouache representing Christ on the cross with his eyes raised to heaven. Léon Bonnat was born in Bayonne on 20 June 1833, and became a pupil at the Paris School of Fine Arts in 1854, under the professorship of Léon Coigniet. He received the second prize in the Prix de Rome in 1857 with his "Resurrection of Lazarus". A very popular portrait painter, he was also asked to decorate the Pantheon with the martyr of Saint-Denis. He was head of the painting workshop at the Beaux-Arts from 1888 to 1905, and had many pupils including Georges Braque, Gustave Caillebotte and Raoul Dufy. He died in Mouchy-Saint-Eloi in 1922.
