A RARE CARVED ROSSO ANTICO MASK IN THE MANNER OF BENEDETTO BOSCHETTI (1820-1860) ITALIAN, LATE 19TH CENTURYThe mask or 'mascaron' of Greek theatrical form, set on a polished black marble base overall height 56cm, base 18cm wide, 13.5cm deep Provenance:Daniel Katz Ltd. London, where purchased by Count Manfredi della GherardescaBenedetto Boschetti (active c.1820-1870) exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition 1851 where he won a medal for a pair of mosaic tables in the Byzantine style, representing the Triumph of Love and the Blessed Soul. The Boschetti workshop at 74 Via Condotti, Rome, was renowned for the exceptional quality of its copies, mostly in marble of Antique vases and objects, for example a rosso antico reduction of the Warwick vase in the Toledo Museum, Ohio (A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Tempo del Gusto, Roma e il Regno delle Duo Sicilie, Milan, 1984, Vol II, fig.286). F.S. Bonfigli noted in 1856 that 'The Establishment is particularly conspicuous for its great variety of marble works, bronzes, etc.' (A. Gonzalez-Palacios, The Art of Mosaics, 1982, p.166). Pieces by Boschetti are in many public and private collections, including that of Mario Praz, the famous Italian critic and connoisseur (now held in the Museo Mario Praz, Rome). In Greek theatre of the third and second century BC, all performers, except musicians, wore masks. A full-face character mask would probably originally have been in painted, starched linen when worn on the stage. Much admired- these masks were often reproduced in stone, terracotta or, occasionally as here, in more expensive marbles. Perhaps the best known collection, now housed in the Cortile del Belvedere, Vatican Museums, adorned the odeon (theatre) at Hadrian's Villa. The Grand Tour saw a considerable rise in interest and use of the mask as a decorative device- reaching its apogee in the work of Thomas Hope. In part the interest was driven with the publication in the mid-18th century of Le Maschere Sceniche e le Figure Comiche d'Antichi Romani by Francesco de' Ficoroni (1664-1747).

              Est: £20,000 - £30,000

BENEDETTO BOSCHETTI (ACTIVE FROM CIRCA 1820) A FINE AND RARE ITALIAN GRAND TOUR GIALLO ANTICO MARBLE TAZZA CIRCA 1820-1840 Carved to interior with raised rosette, within egg and dart border and twin scrolling handles, fluted tapering stem, set on a Belgian black marble base, signed to plinth 'B. Boschetti/Roma' 45cm high, 59cm wide across the handles, base 27cm wide In 1856 Francesco Bonfigli noted in his Artistical Directory or Guide to the Studios of The Italian and Foreign Painters and Sculptor that the Boschetti establishment: is particularly conspicuous for its great variety of marble works, bronzes, candelabras, table tops, etc. besides a rich collection of the best mosaics and shell engravings. The Roman workshop at 74 Via Condotti of Benedetto Boschetti was an essential destination for the wealthy, young travellers engaging on the Grand Tour in the early 19th century. Boschetti was renowned for the exceptional quality of his workshops output, often copies of Antique vases and objects, and went on to exhibit at the Crystal Palace Great Exhibition in 1851. In form this tazza is inspired by a Roman labrum, a hand basin, but executed in the richly coloured hues of Giallo Antico (Marmor Numidicum). Its direct inspiration may lie in a Roman tazza in pavonazzetto marble that was unearthed during the pontificate of Pius VI (1775-1799) and exhibited in the Vatican Museums, where it remains to this day (inv. 1144).

              Sep. 19, 2023

Benedetto Boschetti (Roma, 1820-1879) (attributed to) Augustus of Prima Porta

              Est: €2,000 - €3,000

Benedetto Boschetti (Roma, 1820-1879) (attributed to) Augustus of Prima Porta Bronze, dark patina 35x21x14 cm The marble sculpture of Augustus of Prima Porta, now in the Vatican Museums in Rome, was excavated in 1863 from Villa of Livia, Augustus' wife, in the Prima Porta district.   Also called Augustus Loricato because of detailed armor (lorica), this sculpture was often translated into bronze during the Grand Tour period.   In this edition of the subject, the detailed reproduction of the relief decoration present on the lorica is very fine. Equally meticulous is the rendering of the drapery and the description of the facial features and hands.   Although not signed, this statuette certainly comes from one of the best Roman foundries of the 19th century, probably that of Benedetto Boschetti, who specialized in reproducing classical sculptures.   In the part below the pedestal are the pin and small handle that allowed the sculpture to be rotated according to daily light. This is also a typical detail of Boschetti's production.

WORKSHOP OF BENEDETTO BOSCHETTI (ITALIAN, 1820-1870), A MODEL OF A ROMAN OIL LAMP IN GIALLO ANTICO

              Est: £1,000 - £1,500

WORKSHOP OF BENEDETTO BOSCHETTI (ITALIAN, 1820-1870), A MODEL OF A ROMAN OIL LAMP IN GIALLO ANTICO LATE 19TH CENTURY 15cm high, 17cm wide Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection This model of a Roman oil lamp, which is carved from a variety of Giallo Antico marble that has a distinctive pinkish hue, was perhaps made by the workshop of Benedetto Boschetti (1820 - 1870). During the middle decades of the 19th century, he was one of the most renowned sculptors making small scale models in coloured marbles, that were based on the antique prototypes. His atelier at 74 via Condotti was a popular tourist destination and appeared in guidebooks drawn up for the ever-growing number of well-heeled visitors to the 'Eternal city'.

ATTRIBUTED TO BENEDETTO BOSCHETTI (ITALIAN, 1820-1870), A MODEL OF A ROMAN OIL LAMP IN ROSSO ANTICO MARBLE MID 19TH CENTURY 11cm high, 17cm wide Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection The quality of this model of a Roman oil lamp, which appears in the shape of a satyr's head, is indicative that it was likely made by the workshop of Benedetto Boschetti (1820 - 1870). Boschetti was perhaps the most famous sculptor making small scale models in coloured marbles, that were based on the antique prototypes, for the Grand Tour market in Rome, during the mid-19th century. Indeed, in his well-respected Guide to the Studios in Rome, written for the Grand Tourists, Francesco Saverio Bonfigli described Benedetto Boschetti's bottega as conspicuous for its great variety of marble works, bronzes, candelabras, table tops, etc. besides a rich collection of the best mosaics and shell engravings.

ATTRIBUTED TO BENEDETTO BOSCHETTI (ITALIAN, 1820-1870), AN MODEL OF A ROMAN FLUTED SARCOPHAGUS

              Est: £3,000 - £4,000

ATTRIBUTED TO BENEDETTO BOSCHETTI (ITALIAN, 1820-1870), AN MODEL OF A ROMAN FLUTED SARCOPHAGUS MID 19TH CENTURY Depicted with a pair of lions, in Rosso Antico marble 12cm high, 24cm wide Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection Ancient Roman sarcophagi were popular objects among Grand Tourists and so small-scale models of them, carved in coloured marbles, were made by artisans in Rome to cater for such a demand. This exquisite model of an ancient Roman sarcophagus is decorated with fluted carving and flanked by a pair of pacing lions with their paws resting on spheres - no doubt inspired by the ancient sculpture known as 'The Medici Lion', which resided at the Villa Medici in Rome in the 16th century, before being moved to the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence in the 18th century. Since the 2nd century A.D., marble sarcophagi were widely used throughout the Roman empire for burials of distinguished people. The iconography depicted on such sarcophagi were generally the same as those chosen to decorate homes and public spaces, but they acquired different meanings when viewed in a funerary context. Scholars are divided on whether sarcophagi images are highly symbolic of Roman religious beliefs and conceptions about death and the afterlife or reflect a love of classical culture that was intended to elevate the status of the deceased or were simply conventional decorative motifs.
