Bosley 1913, l.r.; frame bears Minneapolis Institute of Art label, Loan # 16.432 and C.M.A. label, TR 340/5, on verso ; 36 x 34 inches Exhibitions: Minneapolis Museum of Art, Exhibition of Paintings, Miniatures and Sculptures by Members of the Boston Guild of Artists, July 1, 1916 - August 31, 1916; Other Notes: Frederick Bosley was a Boston School painter active in the first half of the 20th century. He studied under Tarbell and Benson at the Boston Museum School, where he later succeeded Tarbell as painting instructor in 1912. A member of the Guild of Boston Artists and the St. Botolph Club, Bosley was known for his romanticized interiors with women, a popular subject for the Boston School painters. The artist depicts a woman seated on the floor in a contemplative posture leaning on a statue of Nike of Samothrace, the Goddess of Victory.

Oil on canvas, 36 1/4 x 35 in. (92.1 x 88.9 cm), in the original frame. Condition: Tears, mild scattered retouch and/or varnish inconsistencies, mild scattered craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Frederick Bosley was born in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and began his studies at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School in 1900 where he was influenced by the work of his teacher, Edmund C. Tarbell. In 1906 he married fellow student, Emily Linzee Sohier. By 1913, Bosley succeeded Tarbell as the Director of the Department of Painting and Drawing at the Museum School, a position he held for 18 years. Bosley set up studio in Boston where he worked alongside his former pupil, Marguerite S. Pearson, and painted the portraits, interiors, and landscapes for which he is best known.
