Painter, Wall painter, Illustrator, b. 1883 - d. 1971

Born in 1883, artist Jessie Botke attended The Art Institute of Chicago. While at the institute, she studied privately with Albert Herter, eventually leaving her hometown of Chicago for New York to work for him as a designer. During her time there she assisted with murals, traveling to San Francisco where she completed the St. Francis Hotel selection of birds mural. Botke traveled extensively before settling in Santa Paula, CA, where she became a Foundation of Western Art member. The wildlife paintings for sale of artist Jessie Botke are filled with flora and birds. Large birds were a favorite subject, with peacocks, swans, geese, and flamingos rendered in exquisite detail. Jessie Botke, painter and lover of nature and its inhabitants, is known for the magical quality she created by using gold leaf in her oils and watercolors.     Jessie Hazel Arms Botke (1883-1971) Convection Clouds The early composition, a landscape with distant foothills and towering clouds, is titled and attributed by Art Institute of Chicago exhibition label verso. The work is quintessential Jesse Arms as she signed her things prior to her marriage in 1915 when she added the name Botke when she signed. She graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1911. The image skillfully displays a variety of techniques in gouache application and thereby a variety of textures and effects. The final product is a handsome example of Jesse Arms (Botke) painting. Board measures 8 x 6 with a framed size of 9.75 x 8 inches. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she developed a distinctive style characterized by exotic and ornately decorated bird studies, often featuring a wide variety of birds including white peacocks, blue peacocks, cockatoos, ducks, swans, geese, pheasants, and toucans. Botke's artistic journey included formal training at the Chicago Art Institute during 1897-98 and again from 1902 to 1905. Her artistic oeuvre extends beyond bird studies to include florals, landscapes, murals, Indian figures, and genre scenes.     Signed Jessie Hazel Botke Watercolor Gouache Painting on Paper Jessie Hazel Arms Botke (1883-1971) was an esteemed American artist, renowned for her contributions to the California school of Impressionism. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she developed a distinctive style characterized by exotic and ornately decorated bird studies, often featuring a wide variety of birds including white peacocks, blue peacocks, cockatoos, ducks, swans, geese, pheasants, and toucans. Botke's artistic journey included formal training at the Chicago Art Institute during 1897-98 and again from 1902 to 1905. Her artistic oeuvre extends beyond bird studies to include florals, landscapes, murals, Indian figures, and genre scenes. (78.7 x 63.5cm) Provenance Private Collection, Virginia. Lot Essay The avian imagery of Jessie Arms Botke occupies a special place within the history of early California painting. Born in Chicago and trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Botke’s subjects—and signature style—are a rich confluence of her education, extensive travels, and professional affiliations. Following a tour of France, Spain, and England in 1909, Botke settled in New York City, securing employment as a tapestry cartoonist and interior designer with Herter Looms. Her murals for the Hastings-on-Hudson home of actress Billie Burke (famous for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz) and at San Francisco’s Hotel St. Francis cemented a career-long affection for birds. The former commission, boasting white peacock accents, was most instructive; Botke recalled her first encounter with the species as “love at first sight.” Relocating to Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1919, and in 1929, to Santa Paula, Botke devoted over a half-century to celebrating California’s diverse bird life. She had a particular fondness for white birds—geese, heron, swans, and peacocks—often situating them within fanciful landscapes or before tapestry-like hedgerows. In the present work, the birds’ lithe bodies and downy coats are framed by blush-toned, trumpet-shaped datura. The background—a brilliant expanse of gold leaf—affords the work a decorative, ethereal quality. Flora intersects with lacy feathers, which cascade into the painting’s lower register. Its impressive scale is reminiscent of Botke’s early-career murals, as are the peacocks’ broadly legible forms.  Botke’s attraction to peacocks transcended mere sentiment. Most compelling, for her, “was the pattern they made. [The] white peacock was so appealing because it was a simple, but beautiful white form to be silhouetted against dark background, and the texture and pattern of the tail broke the harshness of the white mass without losing the simplicity of the pattern.” White Peacocks and Datura, an exemplar of the artist’s decorative, yet virtuoso mature style, offers collectors beauty and simplicity in equal measure.
