Born in Vienna in 1921 as the son of a master butcher, he attended compulsory school and commercial school; after being wounded in the war (shot through the right spoke), he carved figures for a chess set in the military hospital and began to work as a self-taught artist. From 1945 to 1953, he studied under Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was his first student, and then became a freelance artist; member of the Vienna Secession. He received awards such as the Theodor Körner Prize in 1966 and the BAWAG Prize in 1983; exhibitions took place at the Neue Galerie Linz (1957), Secession Vienna (1962), MAK Vienna (1976), Art Basel (1982) and Galerie Chobot (2012), among others. Bottoli created monumental bronze sculptures himself using the lost wax casting process, often massive, plump figures with archaic, Egyptian and Romanesque influences, inspired by literature; critics praised his originality, folksiness and grotesqueness. After some experiments, he returned to his sculptural language of form for the present bronze. The figures have a sculptural character and seem to be enclosed in stone. Counterpart in stone - Penthesilea created some years earlier in 1974 - on the cover of: Bottoli. Figures in Stone and Bronze, Vienna 1986. The book is available as a supplement.
