ALFRED BOUCHER (FRENCH, 1850-1934): AU BUT, SIOT FOUNDRY the dark patinated bronze figural group depicting near nude athletes reaching the Finishing Line (Au But), on shaped oval base signed 'A. BOUCHER', the reverse signed SIOT PARIS 3711, raised on a separate wooden oval plinth, the bronze 45cm high x 68cm wide, 51.5cm high including plinth The initial conception in plaster (entitled "Les Coureurs") won a first class medal at the Paris Salon of 1886, and was praised for its original composition and the technical prowess required to create a dynamic yet perfectly balanced arrangement with each figure supported by just one leg. The French state then commissioned a life-size, bronze version. The cast was exhibited the following year and then stayed in the Luxembourg Gardens, Paris, until it was destroyed during the Nazi occupation. A further example by the Siot foundry numbered 3811 was sold at Sotheby's, Paris, 14 June 2023, lot 57.

An allegorical depiction of Psyche, also known as ''L'Hirondelle blessée'' (The Wounded Swallow). An impressive composition that combines academic naturalism with the poetic formal language of French Symbolism. The gilded bronze depicts a winged young woman seated in a gracefully contorted posture on a pedestal. Her downcast gaze, the softly modeled contours of her body, and her restrained gestures lend the figure a quiet, melancholic aura. Partial loss of patina; repairs on the shoulder and head. This bronze is a reduction of the sculptural group installed in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris. Presented for the first time at the 1886 Salon, it won a first class medal. The scene represents three naked runners in the final moment of the race, tense in the effort to reach the finish line. It is a subject of great compositional complexity, resolved here with remarkable technical and expressive mastery. Alfred Boucher was a French sculptor and painter who enjoyed wide recognition during his lifetime, receiving numerous public commissions. Born in Bouy-sur-Orvin and died in Aix-les-Bains, he grew up in a modest environment: his father, an agricultural worker, entered the service of the sculptor Joseph Marius Ramus in Nogent-sur-Seine. It was there that the young Boucher, introduced to Paul Dubois, found the decisive impulse to develop his artistic vocation. Thanks to the financial support of his town and his department, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1869, where he studied with Paul Dubois and Auguste Dumont. Although he did not win the Grand Prix de Rome, he won second prize in 1876 and completed his training with stays in Italy between 1877-1878 and 1883-1884. His consecration came at the 1881 Salon with La Piété filiale. From then on, his reputation was consolidated both by the diffusion of bronze reductions of his works and by the realization of numerous busts of prominent figures in the scientific, literary and political fields, including René Laennec, Guy de Maupassant, King George I of Greece and President Jean Casimir-Perier. Considered one of the most sought-after French sculptors by public institutions, he successfully cultivated various genres. His work ranged from classically inspired realistic sculpture, such as "Au but!", to compositions with social and labor themes. From 1889 he settled in Aix-les-Bains, although he kept his workshop in Paris, and received numerous memorial commissions, such as the chapel of the Hériot family in La Boissière-École, that of the Caulaincourt family in Caulaincourt or the tomb of Auguste Burdeau in the Père-Lachaise cemetery. In 1902, he founded the Paul Dubois-Alfred Boucher museum in Nogent-sur-Seine, renamed in 2017 the Camille Claudel Museum. That same year, driven by a philanthropic spirit, he created La Ruche, a set of workshops for young artists in the Montparnasse district, reusing a pavilion from the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He was also the teacher of prominent figures, among them Camille Claudel, as well as Laure Coutan and Louis Morel, later collaborator of Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Figure majeure de la sculpture au tournant du XIXème siècle, Alfred Boucher, ami proche de Rodin et premier maître de Camille Claudel est l'auteur de nombreux monuments répondant à de prestigieuses commandes officielles. Son talent très tôt reconnu, il fait une remarquable carrière académique et incarne les valeurs d'un art trop tôt tombé dans l’oubli, balayé par "la modernité". Travailleur infatigable et pédagogue généreux, il est à l'origine de la fondation de "La Ruche", cette pépinière d'artistes dans laquelle ont éclos les grands talents du début du XXème siècle. Magnifique technicien, il a une parfaite connaissance du corps humain qu'il excelle à représenter en pleine action. Il utilise à plusieurs reprises la composition générale d’une femme, nue ou drapée, debout de dos devant une paroi verticale. Boucher fait évoluer la formule au cours du temps, le personnage féminin variant sensiblement avec plusieurs différences dans l’attitude, la coiffure ou la géométrie de la paroi. De ce modèle emblématique de son œuvre, Alfred Boucher tire deux figures allégoriques : La Philosophie de l’Histoire et L’Histoire. Le sculpteur utilise cette dernière allégorie pour rendre hommage au professeur agrégé de philosophie, écrivain et homme politique Auguste Burdeau (1851-1894). Sur ce monument dédié au ministre républicain des finances et ardent défenseur de l'école laïque (Paris, cimetière du Père Lachaise, division 65, fig. 1), notre jeune femme inscrit le nom de Burdeau sur le piédestal soutenant son buste, symbolisant ainsi l’entrée du grand homme dans l’Histoire. Plusieurs versions de l’Histoire sont répertoriées : des réductions en bronze éditées par Siot-Decauville, une grande version en plâtre ou encore différents exemplaires en marbre avec la paroi verticale se terminant en hémicycle. Taillée dans un beau marbre blanc, signée avec application en bas à gauche, notre grand exemplaire est inédit. Il était conservé précieusement par le sculpteur, dans sa célèbre villa "Les Colonnes" à Aix-les-Bains jusqu’à l’acquisition de cette demeure par un parent des actuels propriétaires de l’œuvre. It was there that the young Boucher, shown to the sculptor Paul Dubois, found encouragement to develop his artistic vocation. Thanks to the financial support of his town and department, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1869, where he studied with Paul Dubois and Auguste Dumont. Although he did not win the first prize in Rome, he won the second prize in 1876 and made training stays in Italy in 1877-1878 and 1883-1884. His consecration came at the Salon of 1881 with La Piété filiale. From then on, his fame grew through the diffusion of bronze reductions of his works and the execution of numerous busts of prominent figures in the scientific, literary and political fields, such as Laennec, Maupassant, King George I of Greece and President Jean Casimir-Perier. He was one of the French sculptors most sought after by public institutions. His style successfully tackled various genres: from realistic sculpture of classical inspiration, such as Au but ! a group of runners that won prizes at the 1886 Salon and the 1889 Universal Exposition, to representations of social and labor themes. From 1889 he settled in Aix-les-Bains, keeping his workshop in Paris, and received many memorial commissions, such as the chapel of the Hériot family in La Boissière-École, that of the Caulaincourt family in Caulaincourt or the tomb of Auguste Burdeau in the Père-Lachaise cemetery. In 1902, he founded the Paul Dubois-Alfred Boucher museum in Nogent-sur-Seine, renamed in 2017 as the Camille Claudel museum. That same year, motivated by a philanthropic spirit, he created La Ruche in Paris, a set of workshops for young artists in the Montparnasse district, reusing a pavilion from the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He was also the teacher of several important figures, including Camille Claudel, who dedicated a bust to him, as well as Laure Coutan and Louis Morel, a later collaborator of Renoir.

Alfred BOUCHER (1850-1934). Tête de Volubilis. Bas-relief en marbre, signé. Hauteur : 34 cm, largeur : 28,5 cm, Profondeur : 17,5 cm. (Quelques points de repère de "mise au point " visibles). Volubilis, est certainement l'une des sculptures les plus connues d'Alfred Boucher. Datée de 1896-97, la figure de Volubilis en ronde-bosse se trouve dès 1894 sur le tombeau de Ferdinand Barbedienne au Père-Lachaise. Ce modèle est répertorié dans le catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre d'Alfred Boucher publié par Jacques Piette en 2014 sous le n° A 38. Ce dernier mentionne quatre versions de Volubilis : en pied, à mi-corps, en buste et seulement la tête comme ici sous le numéro A 38e. Il existe aussi une cinquième version datée de 1912 avec une chevelure légèrement différente, Le rêve. De chacune de ces différentes versions de Volubilis Alfred Boucher a réalisé ou fait réaliser par ses praticiens des exemplaires en marbre. Tous ne sont pas répertoriés dans le catalogue raisonné, comme c'est le cas pour l'exemplaire présenté ici Expert : Cabinet Maréchaux. Paris. Provenance : Collection privée belge. Note informative étude : La famille nous a fait part qu'à l'origine ce marbre, ainsi que le premier présenté sous le numéro 193 du catalogue, faisait partie d'une collection privée française située à Nogent sur Seine.
