  • ADRIAEN FRANS BOUDEWYNS (Brussels, 1644 – 1711) "Market Day." Oil on canvas. Relined. Shows slight repainting.
    Jul. 15, 2026

ADRIAEN FRANS BOUDEWYNS (Brussels, 1644 – 1711) "Market Day." Oil on canvas. Relined. Shows slight repainting.

    Est: €7,000 - €9,000

ADRIAEN FRANS BOUDEWYNS (Brussels, 1644 – 1711) "Market Day." Oil on canvas. Relined. Shows slight repainting. Measurements: 68 x 83.5 cm; 85 x 102 cm (frame). An open-air genre scene presenting an idealized view of rural life, centered on market activity. The composition depicts a lively yet peaceful atmosphere, in which the figures blend seamlessly into the landscape without any signs of daily toil or hardship. The figures, dressed in brightly colored clothing, add dynamism and hallmarks of contrast against the more subdued tones of the natural surroundings. The spatial organization follows classical traditions, with a balanced composition that guides the viewer’s gaze toward the background through a carefully constructed perspective. The landscape elements frame the scene and create depth, gradually opening up the space toward the distance. The landscape takes center stage, while the smaller-scale figures serve as a narrative complement to the scene. The work is fully representative of the oeuvre of Adriaen Frans Boudewyns, a prominent Flemish Baroque painter who specialized in landscapes. Trained in Brussels in the studio of Ignatius van der Stock, he attained the rank of master in 1665 and subsequently pursued a successful career in Paris, where he worked alongside Adam Frans van der Meulen from 1673 to 1677 on various commissions for Louis XIV. His style combines the meticulousness of the Flemish landscape tradition with the influence of French classicism, particularly that of Claude Lorrain and Herman van Swanevelt, resulting in balanced and luminous compositions in which nature and human activity coexist harmoniously. In many of his works, Boudewyns collaborated with other artists specializing in figure painting, such as Pieter Bout, while he focused on constructing the landscape. This painting reveals his characteristic interest in expansive natural settings and in depicting everyday scenes set within a serene and orderly environment. The combination of deep perspective, carefully structured landscape architecture, and narrative animation makes the scene a representative example of late 17th-century Flemish landscape painting. The artist’s significance is also reflected in the presence of numerous works by him in major collections, including fourteen landscapes preserved at the Prado Museum that originated from the royal collections. It shows slight signs of repainting.

According to James Byam Shaw, this unusually colorful landscape study, along with two other sheets using the same technique, is one of the artist's “particularly beautiful” drawings. The free brushwork and cool, finely graded watercolor tones lend the landscape a sense of vastness and give it the character of an immediate impression of nature.

In profiliertem Holzrahmen. ADRIEN FRANS BOUDEWYNS (Brussels,1644-1711) and PIETER BOUT (Brussels, ca. 1658-1719). "Landscape with a village in Italy and a market scene". Oil on canvas. Provenance: London sale, Christie's, 21 October 1994, no. 136; Paris sale, Drouot Montaigne, Kohn studio, 12 June 1996, no. 27. Measurements: 33 x 42 cm. This work is an example of the artistic collaboration between Adrien Frans Boudewyns (Brussels, 1644-1711) and Pieter Bout (Brussels, ca. 1658-1719), two Flemish masters who, as was common at the time, used to unite complementary talents to enrich their compositions. This collaborative practice, widespread in the Netherlands during the 17th and 18th centuries, allowed painters specialized in different genres, such as landscape and the human figure, to work together on the same canvas, achieving a visual harmony that transcended individual skill. In this work, Boudewyns' hand is clearly perceived in the articulation of the landscape, executed with a meticulousness that refers both to the classical ideal and to the Flemish sensibility for atmosphere and naturalistic detail. The Italianate architectures, the broad masses of trees and the dynamic sky, animated by moving clouds and birds in flight, recall the influence of the Roman landscape painting of the circle of Gaspard Dughet and Claude Lorrain, whose echoes were much appreciated in Flanders at the time. The arrangement of the built elements, with towers, red-tiled roofs and Renaissance-inspired structures, underlines the interest in evoking an idealized Italy, typical of the classicist landscape. Pieter Bout, on the other hand, has skillfully animated the scene by means of a group of human figures carefully arranged throughout the composition. In the foreground we observe a lively market scene, with merchants, shoppers, pack animals and children lending vitality to the scene. The figures, although small in scale, are modeled with precision and expressiveness, and present a variety of attitudes that contribute to the visual narrative of the painting. Their clothing and attitudes denote an interest in capturing everyday life, a very characteristic tendency of Flemish Baroque that combines the picturesque with the realistic. The scene, although set in an imagined Italy, does not respond to a specific topography, but rather to an ideal construction where the golden light, the changing sky and human interaction form a harmonious and evocative space.

ADRIEN FRANS BOUDEWIJNS (Brussels, 1644 - Brussels, 1711). "Country scene". Oil on panel. It presents Repainting on the pictorial surface. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 25 x 34 cm; 32,5 x 41 cm (frame). Scene outdoors, which is presented to the viewer in an idyllic way by hosting a romantic presentation of the peasantry. Fleeing from the signs of effort and showing a cheerful society, dressed in richly colored costumes that stand out against the dark tones that dominate part of the scene. The author presents us with a classical perspective, with a vanishing point located in the center of the scene. This type of genre scene was very common in the Dutch school. Adriaen Frans Boudewijns was a Flemish landscape painter, draughtsman and engraver. He was known mainly for his Italianate landscapes with architecture, rivers and villages, views of cities, coasts and countryside, and architectural scenes. Adriaen Frans Boudewijns was a pupil of the landscape painter and engraver Ignatius van der Stock. On December 16, 1666, Boudewijns signed a three-year contract in Paris in the service of the Flemish painter Adam Frans van der Meulen, with whom he collaborated on the design of twelve Gobelins depicting the months for the French king Louis XIV. Van der Meulen executed the smaller figures and part of the landscapes. The rest of the landscapes were executed by Boudewijns and Abraham Genoels, another Flemish painter active in Paris. Boudewijns also traveled with Genoels to make sketches of a castle near Brussels for the design of a tapestry for the king of France. While in Paris, Boudewijns engraved many of van der Meulen's compositions. He also made engravings from the work of Genoels, the Dutch artist Jan van Hughtenburgh and his own designs. All of the surviving pictures are believed to have been painted after his return to Brussels from Paris. He often collaborated with other specialist painters who added the figures in his landscapes. Collaborations are recorded with Charles Emmanuel Biset, Pointié Dupont, his pupil Matthys Schoevaerdts and, most frequently, Pieter Bout. Boudewijns' work combines the northern tradition of landscape painting with the Roman classicism exemplified by Claude Lorrain and Poussin. His landscapes often show scenery bathed in a brilliant southern glow, sometimes with some ancient architectural element, against a vivid, naturalistic cloudy sky. These idealized, classically cut landscapes became Boudewijns' trademark. His meticulous depiction of trees shows the influence of Gaspard Dughet. All of his landscapes are meticulously painted and often populated with figures painted by Pieter Bout- In general, Boudewijns' landscapes can be divided into three types. The first type resembles the work of the landscape painters of the Sonian Forest school, such as Jacques d'Arthois and Cornelis Huysmans. A second type of landscape depicts Italianate architectural elements set in a flat landscape with a row of hills as a backdrop. Finally, he produced a series of village and river landscapes that recall the style of Jan Brueghel the Elder in terms of compositional structure and technical precision. It presents Repainting on the pictorial surface.

He was known mainly for his landscapes with trees, Italianate landscapes with architecture, rivers and villages, city, coast and country views and architectural scenes. Adriaen Frans Boudewijns was born in Brussels where he was baptized in the St Nicolas Church on 3 October 1644. He was the son of Nicolas Boudewijns and Françoise Jonquin. He married Louise de Ceul on 5 October 1664. The couple likely remained childless. On 23 November 1665 he was registered at the same time as a pupil and master of the Brussels Guild of Saint Luke. He was a pupil of the landscape painter and engraver Ignatius van der Stock. On 16 December 1666 Boudewijns is recorded in Paris when he entered into a 3-year contract to work in the service of the Flemish painter Adam Frans van der Meulen. He is recorded as working with van der Meulen on the design of 12 Gobelins representing the months for French King Louis XIV. Van der Meulen executed the smaller figures and part of the landscapes. The remainder of the landscapes was completed by Boudewijns and Abraham Genoels, another Flemish painter active in Paris. Boudewijns also travelled with Genoels to make sketches of a castle near Brussels for a design of a tapestry for the King of France. While in Paris, Boudewijns engraved many of van der Meulen's compositions. He also made engravings after the work of Genoels, the Dutch artist Jan van Hughtenburgh and his own designs. Boudewijns married the sister of Adam Frans van der Meulen called Barbe or Barbara on 12 January 1670. The couple had two children of whom the oldest named Frans became a painter. Barbe Boudewijns died on 2 March 1674. Around this time Boudewijns must have returned home. He is documented in Brussels in 1677 when he was present at the baptism of his nephew Adriaen Frans on 4 June 1677. He married a third time in Brussels in 1670. He had a studio in Brussels where he received in 1682 Andreas Meulebeek as his pupil and the next year Mathys Schoevaerdts. His nephew Adriaen (Frans) became his pupil in 1694. He also trained his son Frans. It is believed that he was ruined during the bombardment of Brussels, the vicious artillery bombardment of Brussels carried out by French troops on 13, 14 and 15 August 1695 which caused the destruction of a third of the buildings in Brussels. He died in Brussels on 3 December 1719. Boudewijns was a landscape artist who produced paintings, drawings and prints. All surviving paintings are believed to have been painted after his return to Brussels from Paris. From his Paris years are mainly known his tapestry designs, drawings and engravings. Only a few of his paintings are dated. He often collaborated with other specialist painters who added the figures in his landscapes. Collaborations with Charles Emmanuel Biset, Pointié Dupont, his pupil Matthys Schoevaerdts and most frequently Pieter Bout are recorded. Boudewijns' work combines the Northern tradition of landscape painting with the Roman classicism exemplified by Claude Lorrain and Poussin. His landscapes often show landscapes bathed in a bright southern glow, occasionally with an ancient architectural element, against a lively and naturalist sky with clouds. These Classical idealized landscapes became Boudewijns' trademark. His meticulous rendering of trees shows the influence of Gaspard Dughet. All his landscapes are meticulously painted and often peopled with figures painted by Pieter Bout. The landscapes of Boudewijns can generally be divided into three types. The first type resembles the work of the Sonian Forest school of landscape painters such as Jacques d'Arthois and Cornelis Huysmans. These painters from Brussels had a preference for depicting sand flats with deep lying roads surrounded by trees. These compositions show the landscapes in a bright light. A second type of landscape depicts Italianate architectural elements set in a flat landscape with a row of hills as a backdrop. Finally, he made a number of village and river landscapes that recall the style of Jan Brueghel the Elder in compositional structure and technical precision. Boudewijns' many prints were based on paintings or designs of Adam Frans van der Meulen, Abraham Genoels and on his own designs. In profiliertem Holzrahmen.
