This picture is to be the property of the first Miss Macbeath who changes her surname by the Holy Contract of Matrimony - and it is earnestly entreated by Mr B. that the young ladies wont [sic] fall out and fight about it.'Samuel Bough is one of the most influential Scottish landscape painters of the 19th century. Though born in Carlisle, he spent most of his career in Scotland, moving to Glasgow in 1848 and settling in Edinburgh in 1855. This four-panel ensemble - unseen in public since its completion over 163 years ago - captures the spontaneity, loose handling and atmospheric sensitivity that established Bough as a precursor to the Scottish Impressionists. Unique in both format and execution, the panels display a freedom so boldly Turneresque that they verge on abstraction. The ensemble was created for the daughters of Bough’s friend, David Macbeath, a Berwick-Upon-Tweed-based wine merchant with a home in London. Conceived as a unified work, the panels evoke the four seasons through contrasting scenes of coast, countryside and city, linked chromatically by a progression from mustard yellow through ochre and russet to a deep red-brown. The first panel, likely a sunrise, shows a coastal scene characteristic of Bough’s life-long interest in the small East Coast harbours. Ships in the middle distance and a rowing boat in the foreground create depth, while the luminous handling of light recalls works such as Dysart on the Fife Coast (1862), though the brushwork here is far more radical and experimental. The second panel presents a summery pastoral landscape: rolling foothills, water to one side, and loosely rendered cattle. It recalls compositions such as Bough’s Borrowdale views and reflects his enduring fascination with mountainous terrain, from the Lake District to the Scottish Highlands. The scene was likely inspired by sketches made during his extensive travels in 1862. In the third panel, an autumnal mood prevails. Mist drifts across a valley beneath distant, snow-capped peaks. Bough rarely painted wintry subjects, making this atmospheric treatment particularly striking, as he balances delicacy with dramatic impact. The final panel shifts to urban Edinburgh, depicting a rain-soaked Princes Street animated by a military parade. Quick diagonal strokes suggest bayonets, lending energy and movement to the foreground. The viewpoint corresponds to known sketches by Bough and situates the scene near his George Street studio, with St Giles’ Cathedral visible in the distance. The ensemble is documented in an 1863 letter from Bough to Macbeath, in which he describes ‘four sketches in the one frame’ intended for the latter’s daughters - Anne, Helen and Eliza. With characteristic humour, Bough proposed that the panels should belong to whichever daughter married first. Anne eventually fulfilled this condition in 1874, becoming the rightful owner. Bough’s warm relationship with the Macbeath family is well attested in his correspondence from 1862 to 1877. He frequently stayed with them in London and maintained an affectionate interest in the daughters, whom he dubbed ‘the three Graces.’ His letters reveal both familiarity and playfulness, offering a glimpse into the personal context behind this extraordinary and highly individual work.

The wind is still high, and the boats roll on the churning sea, which glints in the low light. The composition’s theatrical quality is furthered by Bough’s signature technique of painting ‘into the sun’, so that much of the foreground is cast into dramatic shadowy silhouette under the pinks, blues and golds of the lightening sky. So dark is the water that we, like the sailors, must scan the waves to assess the damage incurred overnight: inspection reveals the floating fragmentary remains of sailboats and barrels. Yet life must go on: to the left, a cluster of fishing boats deliver the morning catch to the waiting hands on the harbour, to be sorted and carried to markets inland. West Wemyss is situated on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, and takes its name from the Wemyss family, who have been resident in the area since the twelfth century. From the seventeenth century onwards West Wemyss harbour served as a major entrepôt for the exportation of coal mined on the family’s estate, and the importation of wood, flax and iron. The honing of steamboat technology over the course of the nineteenth century signalled the beginning of the end of the economic viability of sail-powered boats. Bough’s portrayal of a harbour crowded with sailboats, their intricate masts and rigging rendered with affectionate exactitude, may be somewhat romanticised, yet on the far-right horizon he has painted a chugging Wemyss-bound steamboat, heralding the advent of industrial modernity. A fervent admiration for J.M.W. Turner’s maritime paintings led Bough to specialise in harbour scenes from the mid-1850s onwards. Indeed, he would on occasion compose pictures from an identical vantage-point previously used by Turner. Bough was a self-taught artist and likely found it instructive to paint and draw inspired by Turner exemplars (for example in 1837 Bough, aged only fifteen, painted Berwick-upon-Tweed from the same vantage point as Turner had. A further version painted in 1863 is in the National Galleries of Scotland (NG 2121)). Bough’s reverence for Turner might account for certain similarities between West Wemyss Harbour and Turner’s 1840 masterpiece The Slave Ship (Museum of Fine Arts Boston, 99.22), which is rendered on a comparably monumental scale of 91cm x 123cm. Bough’s painting does not set out to bear an equivalent political charge to Turner’s; instead, it is as if Bough felt enticed by the technical challenges presented by the rosy sky, rolling sea, and narrative dynamism achieved by the master of Romantic painting, but determined to interpret these components in his own distinctly Scottish style. The expert animation of the harbour and sky in West Wemyss Harbour demonstrates this painting’s importance, underlining Bough’s prowess as a maritime painter which is arguably unparalleled amongst his Scottish contemporaries.

The Town House Hotel, 4th December 1991, lot 138 Situated off the coast of North Berwick, the iconic silhouette of Bass Rock has inspired many artists. An 1865 painting of the Bass Rock after a storm by Sam Bough is in the collection of the University of St Andrew's Wardlaw Museum.
