ALICE BOUGHTON (1866-1943) William Butler Yeats reading a book. Toned silver print, the image measuring 7 5/8x6 1/4 inches (19.4x15.9 cm.), the mount 10x8 inches (25.4x20.3 cm.), with Boughton's signature, copyright, and date in ink and Yeats' credit in pencil in an unknown hand on mount recto, and the Culver Pictures label, barcode, and stamp on mount verso. 1904 Provenance: The Culver Archive Aside from her portraits of literary and theatrical figures, for which she is well-known, Boughton was a Fellow of Alfred Stieglitz's Photo-Secession. She was published in Camera Work and included in his exhibitions, including landscape, images of children, and nude studies. Boughton was also active in feminist causes, and a member of the New Woman, active in promoting the parity of women's artwork, and in the educated and modern woman.

Boughton (1866 – 1943) was a photography student at the Pratt Institute in New York, where Gertrude Käsebier was a student as well. Boughton became Käsebier’s assistant. She operated a successful portrait studio in New York. She became associated with Alfred Stieglitz, and became a Fellow of the Photo Secession. Several of her photographs were published in Camera Work. These are two photographs. One, ca. 1910, is of a baby, identified as her daughter “Jane” in pencil on the verso. It is a platinum print, 5 7/8 x 7 ¾ inches mounted on an 11 x 14 inch board. It is signed lightly in pencil on the bottom left, and has her curious monogram drawn in pen on the mount. The other photograph is a gelatin silver print, made several years later, showing Margaret and Jane Boughton, as identified in pencil on the verso. It is 7 ¼ x 5 ½ inches, on a 8 5/8 x 6 inch backing, that is in turn mounted on a 14 x 10 `3/5 inch mount. It is signed in light pencil on the bottom left, and has her monogram drawn in pen.

Alice Boughton (American, 1865-1943) Three Photographs of the Fuller Sisters, c. 1914. All signed "Alice Boughton" in graphite l.l. or l.r. Gelatin silver prints, image/sheet sizes to 8 1/8 x 6 1/4 in. (20.7 x 15.8 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Two of three mounted, the unmounted print with adhesive residue in upper corners of the verso, lightly faded, minor accretions and pinpoint fox marks. Provenance: From the collection of Percy MacKaye, by descent to the current owner Marion MacKaye Ober, Massachusetts. N.B. Alice Boughton was associated with Alfred Stieglitz's Photo-Secession, a group of photographers who sought to elevate the medium's status to that of other fine arts like drawing and printmaking. The Fuller sisters hailed from Dorset, England, and were pioneers in the collection and performance of folk songs from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. They frequently toured America, first visiting the town of Cornish, New Hampshire, at the invitation of Percy and Marion MacKaye.

Edith Wynne Matthison in "Everyman," by Alice Boughton.

11" x 8" platinum print on tissue paper, signed by Boughton in pencil on the bottom margin recto. I am grateful to theater historian Laurence Senelick of Tufts University and his student Stephen Kuehler for information regarding these photographs. Matthison was the first "Everyman" in the U.S., a performance that originated in London in 1901, and played to great acclaim from 1902 to 1912. This is accompanied by a sepia gelatin silver print of Matthison in this role, identified by Kuehler as by Joseph Byron. In addition this lot contains two large black album pages with many tiny prints, some landscapes but mostly portraits, that may also be by Boughton. The Boughton photograph has, in pencil, "Mr. Rickett" in pencil on the verso. For that, see Lots 99 and 100
