The sage Wouter took them one after the other, and having poised them in his hands, and attentively counted over the number of leaves, fell straightway into a very great doubt. He smoked for half and hour without saying a word; at long while, with his finger beside his nose, and shutting his eyes for----with the air of a man who has just caught a subtle-----, he slowly took his pipe from his mouth, puffed forth a column of tobacco smoke, and, with marvelous gravity and solemnity, pronounced---that having carefully counted over the leaves and weighed the books, it was found that one was just as thick and heavy as the other; therefore, it was the final opinion of the court that the accounts were equally balanced--therefore, Wandle should give Barent a receipt, and Barent should give Wandle a receipt." GEORGE HENRY BOUGHTON, RA,  BRITISH / AMERICAN 1833-1905-  AT THE WELL;  OIL ON CANVAS, 46.2 X 30.

      Est: £300 - £500

George Henry Boughton, RA,  British / American 1833-1905-  At the well;  oil on canvas, 46.2 x 30.8 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 6 February 1981, lot 121 (part).  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The artist repeatedly returned to the subject of young female figures in a natural setting, often as the personification of the seasons. Boughton's paintings generally present a somewhat romanticised image of rural labour, even when they are not explicitly allegorical, with the present work depicting a contemplative young figure lost in thought, in a dark and dreamy setting. Her pose, the drapery of her costume, and the jug, which is filled to the right, hint towards an element of Classicism.
