    Riz Abadie. 1898.

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 39 1/4 x 55 1/8 in./99.8 x 140 cm PRINTER: Imp. Courmont Frères, Paris DESCRIPTION: In the Belle Époque, it was rare enough for a young woman to smoke, let alone roll her own, which is why cigarette paper companies of the period subtly encouraged women to take up the habit. This is one of Gray’s finest posters, with a wealth of decorative detail not usually found in his images. And although the central medallion recalls Mucha, Gray poses his model far more seductively than Mucha’s famous poster for Job cigarette papers done the same year. A prolific caricaturist and illustrator who worked for a half-dozen Paris periodicals, Gray also designed posters for music halls and other clients using several different styles. (Art Nouveau; Tobacco)

A graphic journeyman, he could readily adapt his style to the requirements of different clients with startlingly impressive results. Here, probably (if not unconsciously) somewhat under Pal’s influence, he creates an unabashed rider soaring on her cycle to its namesake—the brightest star in the heavens” (Gold, p. 50). Nov. 15, 2020

    Casino Marie-Christine. ca. 1895.

    Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 39 1/2 x 55 in./100.5 x 139.7 cm PRINTER: Affiches Camis, Paris DESCRIPTION: Gray appears to have indulged in a moment of pure fantasy when he dressed this lady in what appears to be a negligée. Only two decades before, female beach-goers were expected to wear full-length wool gowns that covered them from wrist to ankle. In the late 19th century, French swimsuits still came to the knee, and changing clothes was commonly done in the privacy of a bathing machine. So this provocative lady would appear to be a historical outlier—but she certainly would have turned heads and caught the attention of passersby. The Casino Marie-Christine, named after the princess of the two Sicilies (1806-1878), was built in 1882 in Le Havre; it was replaced by a luxury building in 1960. (Art Nouveau; Travel)

ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 57 5/8 x 55 in./146.2 x 139.6 cm PRINTER: Imp. Courmont Frères, Paris DESCRIPTION: While most poster artists of the Belle Époque tried to freeze a moment in a frame, H. Gray loved playing with narrative. Throughout the 1890s, his posters for Rudge-Whitworth Cycles told a tale of female empowerment. Here, Gray is obviously inspired by silent film and the outsized theatrical gestures typical of the form. The result is fantastic: our great actress performs "gut health" stimulated by Royal-Eclair, "the sole electrified" apéritif available in all cafés. The warm painterly shades of the backdrops, in particular, will make your insides all warm and nice. This is a two-sheet poster. (Art Nouveau; Alcohol)

    Théâtre de l'Opéra / 3e Bal Masqué. 1899.

ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 37 3/8 x 49 5/8 in./95 x 126 cm PRINTER: Affiches Camis, Paris DESCRIPTION: Masked balls had been held at the old Paris Opera House since the 1850s. By the end of the 19th century, up to four "grands bals masqués" per season (January to March) were held at the (new) Théâtre de l'Opéra. Gray created several designs for the events; here he presents a different perspective of the grand foyer of the Opera Garnier; a delightful Joker waves the wand for the third Bal Masqué of 1899. If ever there was something that could top the magnificence and opulence of the Opéra Garnier, it was surely the Grand Bal Masqué at the Opéra Garnier, held once a month from January to March. This one, the first of the 1898 season, was to celebrate the inauguration of the Grand Cascade at the Bois de Boulogne, a tremendous, romantic waterfall in the middle of the park. Streamers fly from the box seats and an enormous backdrop of the cataract floods out to a sea of gowns and top hats. (Art Nouveau; Dance)

ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 51 5/8 x 39 in./131 x 99 cm PRINTER: Imp. Delattre & Juliot, Paris DESCRIPTION: In ominous shades of slate and dark blue, Gray depicts a scene from Maurice Donnay's 1903 play, The Return from Jerusalem. "Maurice Donnay collaborated on the Annales de la Patrie française and caused a sensation on the boulevards with an anti-Semitic play, Retour de Jérusalem. Donnay began his career, as we have seen, at the Chat Noir, descended to the boulevards where he made a reputation as an author of light comedies and ended an honored member of the Académie française. Nationalists from Lemaître to Simone de Beauvoir's father adored Donnay plays, perhaps because the typical Donnay hero—an aging boulevardier, debonair, experienced, gray at the temples but still handsome—represented a flattering portrait of themselves" (The Politics of Resentment, p. 449). Below the Christ figure here, the text reads: "On seeing this lamentable flock of my persecuted and hunted coreligionists, I swore to myself to avenge those of my race." While little is known regarding the plot of the Biot-Graphe Revue by Tomy and Telloc, theatre critics at the time raved about the production, one going so far as to dub it the greatest show of the year. ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 16 1/8 x 24 in./41 x 61 cm PRINTER: Imp. Courmont Freres, Paris DESCRIPTION: The buxom flower-seller is desperate; even as a prospective customer climbs a ladder to escape her sales pitch, the landlord is bearing down upon her with an eviction notice. While little is known regarding the plot of the Biot-Graphe Revue by Tomy and Telloc, theatre critics at the time raved about the production, one going so far as to dub it the greatest show of the year. ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 57 5/8 x 55 in./146.2 x 139.6 cm PRINTER: Imp. Courmont Freres, Paris DESCRIPTION: While most poster artists of the Belle Époque tried to freeze a moment in a frame, H. Gray loved playing with narrative. Throughout the 1890s, his posters for Rudge-Whitworth Cycles told a tale of female empowerment. Here, Gray is obviously inspired by silent film, and the outsized theatrical gestures typical of the form. The result is fantastic: our great actress performs "gut health" stimulated by Royal-Eclair, "the sole electrified" aperitif (what?) in all cafés. The warm painterly shades of the backdrops, in particular, will make your insides all warm and nice. This is a two-sheet poster. (Art Nouveau; Alcohol)

Herold, Paris DESCRIPTION: Off she goes to the cycle show: our leading lady glances behind her as if to say, "Well, aren't you coming?" She is ready to ride, and dressed for the job: her elegant bonnet veil will help protect against sun and dirt while she zooms along, and her kitten heels are just the right height to guarantee swift pedaling—while still looking chic. Gray's advertisement for the 1894 cycle show is a simple and elegant invitation to see all the newest and greatest velocipedes in town. (Bicycles; By Air, Land, or Sea; Art Nouveau)

And although the central medallion recalls Mucha, Gray poses his model far more seductively than Mucha’s famous poster for Job cigarette papers (see Nos. BED-1, GB-11) done the same year. A prolific caricaturist and illustrator who worked for a half-dozen Paris periodicals, Gray also designed posters for music halls and other clients using several different styles. If ever there were something that could top the magnificence and opulence of the Òpera Garnier, it was surely the Grand Bal Masque at the Òpera Garnier, held once a month from January to March. This one, the first of the season in 1898, was to celebrate the inauguration of the Grand Cascade at the Bois de Boulogne, a tremendous, romantic waterfall in the middle of the park. Streamers fly from the box seats and an enormous backdrop of the cataract floods out to a sea of gowns and top hats. (Event; Art Nouveau)
