In schöner Erhaltung The paper minimally browned, with old paper losses, some tear nail holes. Louise Bourgeois is best known for her sculptural works, but in the first decade of her career she mainly worked on paper. Shortly after her arrival in the United States, she produced drawings that were strongly influenced by Surrealism. From 1949 onwards, she was very familiar with Surrealism, which enabled her to gradually break away from it and transform it into her own form. Bourgeois' parents ran a shop for historical textiles in Paris. As a result, the artist came into contact with textile elements from an early age and became interested in the "joining" of two pieces of fabric. This joining or working with several pieces was to influence her later work. It can also be found in simplified form in the present drawing, in which Bourgeois created two differently sized pieces of paper by folding them. In this process, she is concerned with the injury as well as the healing of a composition. The filigree ink drawing is still very much rooted in a surrealist formal language and shows an abstract, sculptural figure that seems to combine feminine and masculine elements. Bourgeois is an incomparable magician whose work has influenced an entire generation of artists. In sehr guter Erhaltung The paper minimally faded, with studio traces on the reverse. In 1980, Louise Bourgeois acquired a larger studio in Brooklyn and began to create increasingly large-format works. Initially, she created drawings and figures that already pointed to the next phase of her work, including the work offered here. From 1991 onwards, she added "Cells", installations of closed, mostly barred rooms, which she filled with autobiographically influenced objects and artefacts. The work on paper offered here is a transitional work, away from the objects and towards pure installation. However, the spinning top-like form has a very sculptural effect and clearly references her stone and bronze objects. Signed, titled, dated and numbered VII/X in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Harlan & Weaver, New York. Published by Peter Blum Edition, New York. A very good impression. According to Louise Bourgeois, The Complete Prints and Books, online catalogue raisonné by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, "In the 1950s, when Bourgeois was living with her husband and children in an apartment on 18th Street in New York City, the family had two cats: Champfleurette and Tyger. According to Marie-Laure Bernadac, 'The name of the cat is a feminisation of the French writer and art critic Jules Champfleury' (1821-1889)." Bourgeois commented, "This is a subject which is recurrent. There is a kind of disassociation between what the girl thinks . . . that is, what she wishes . . . and what she appears to be. What she wishes is to be a goody-goody . . . but the document reveals that her deeper mind is on something completely different! What you are and what you are not are intertwined. But don't worry about her . . . even if there are several facets of herself . . . she is still whole . . . she can handle that without breaking. She accepts herself . . . she doesn't know that she is ridiculous. This implies a very strong will . . . when someone is subject to terrific pulls in many directions but does not break. It is an ideal portrait . . . it is an ambition. The charm items are the hair and the high heels . . . and also, her nails are done! The face is goody-goody . . . the eyes are lowered . . . the paws are very relaxed . . . she is comfortable. You can tell she is pleased with herself. She wants to impress. She is the same as the Bosom Lady. There is a matter of ransom here. The ransom of being so happy is that you look ridiculous . . . the saving grace is that you don't know it!"
