    FRENCH BRONZE FIGURE OF A CLASSICAL ARCHER, POSSIBLY REPRESENTING ULYSSES, AFTER JACQUES BOUSSEAU (1680-1740), LATE 19TH CENTURY above a green marble base, h: 19 x w: 8 x d: 7.25 in. Bousseau was a pupil of Nicolas Coustou. In 1715, he was elected a member of the Academie de Peinture and Sculpture, and presented his morceau de reception ("soldat qui bande son arc"), a subject that was given to him by Van Cleve, the director of the Academie (see R. Crozet). The marble version of the present bronze is in the collection of the Musee du Louvre. Literature: New York, M.     HERCULE ET SON ARC Important Bronze signé de Jacques Bousseau (1681-1740) Edition du XIXè siècle H : 87 ; L : 50 cm Jacques Bousseau est un sculpteur français, né à la Crépelière, à Chavagnes-en-Paillers (France) le 17 mars 1681, décédé à Madrid (Espagne) le 13 février 1740. Élève de Nicolas Coustou, il fut agréé à l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1715. En France et en Espagne il porta le titre de Sculpteur du Roi. Il fut célèbre pendant sa vie. Après sa mort en Espagne, son nom tomba dans l'oubli pendant plus de deux siècles. Il faudra attendre les années 1970 -1980 pour que l'on porte intérêt à ses aeuvres avec notamment l'article de M. Ribemont dans laRevue 303 dont la presse vendéenne se fera l'écho, puis l'article de Mme Loiseau en 2006 dans le livre « Vendée côté jardin ».

Elève de Nicolas Coustou, Jacques Bousseau fut premier prix de sculpture en 1705. Après trois années passées à l'Académie de France à Rome il fut agrée en 1713 et Académicien en 1715. Il travailla pour les Châteaux de Versailles et Marly, à Notre-Dame de Paris et en Espagne ou il fut nommé 1er sculpteur du Roi. Notre épreuve en bronze est une réduction de son morceau de réception à l'Académie Royale de peinture et de sculpture, exécuté en marbre en 1715 ( Musée du Louvre ref. MR 1766 ) h: 88 cm
