Six anastatic printed illustrations for Child's Play, 1852, a group of six anastatic printed illustrations on thin card, four heightened with brown ink, each with handwritten caption to verso, including the title page, the other illustrations depicting Wee Willie Winkie, Here we are on Tom Tickler's ground, Cuckoo, Mary, Mary, quite contrary, and I had a little Castle upon the sea-side, some minor or light soiling (mainly to sheet edges), generally in good condition, each 248 x 177 mm QTY: (6) NOTE: Six of the seventeen anastatic printed illustrations from Eleanor Vere Boyle's Child's Play, published by Addey & Co. in 1852. This first edition of Eleanor Vere Boyle's first book, a collection of illustrated nursery rhymes, was issued with monochrome illustrations after her original drawings printed by the anastatic process. An original drawing by the artist for the same publication was sold in these rooms in June 2024 (Modern Literature, Private Press, Original Book Art, Pop-Up Books, Playing Cards & Games, 20 June, 2024, lot 549) along with two smaller related sketches, and some proof engravings after the illustrations, which were contained in a contemporary album inscribed by Eleanor Vere Boyle to her friend and art tutor Sir William Boxall. This lot originates from the same private collection and may therefore be proofs for the published work, four of which have corrections in brown ink, presumably by the artist herself.

B[oyle] (E[leanor] V[ere]) Ros rosarum ex horto poetarum, first edition, title in red, illustrations and decorations, extra-illustrated with 28 mostly French engravings, either bound in or cut and mounted on blank leaves, bound in crushed brown morocco elaborately tooled in gilt with climbing roses of small red & dark red onlays and small heart-shaped leaves, upper cover with author's initials at centre, spine titled in gilt with similarly decorated compartments and five raised bands, turn-ins with spray of three gilt roses to each corner, pale yellow silk moiré doublures and endpapers, original decorative upper wrapper bound in at end, t.e.g., others uncut, upper joint neatly repaired, (180 x 110mm.), printed at the Chiswick Press, 1885 § Book of Common Prayer (The), bound in dark green morocco with central scalloped oval panel of three onlaid cream flowers surrounded by small birds in gilt against a background of onlaid red flowers with leafy stems and small gilt dots, lower cover with identical gilt tooling but no onlays, g.e., spine titled "Prayer" in gilt between floral ornaments and small birds, inner gilt dentelles, g.e., rebacked preserving old gilt spine, (c.155 x 90mm.) Here we are on Tom Tickler's ground/Picking up gold and silver!, circa 1852, pen & grey ink on paper, mounted on card, depicting a number of small girls in the countryside picking flowers, with goats and trees in the background, pencilled caption lower right, sheet size 17 x 13cm, together with two other small sketches by the same artist, one of a small girl cradling a dove, pencil and red ink on card, edges irregularly cut, sheet size 10.5 x 9.5cm, and the other of the Madonna and Child within an architectural setting, red ink and watercolour wash on card, with coloured paint blotches beneath, trimmed to top and left-hand edge (latter with 1" closed tear), sheet size 20 x 7cm, plus a folder of approximately 45 prints and engravings of illustrations by Boyle, many relating to Child's Play, some spotted, some mounted, contained together in a green half morocco folder, lettered in gilt on upper cover 'Child's Play EVB', rubbed, lacking ties, inscribed by the artist on front pastedown 'William Bloxall Esqre. from EVB his grateful pupil Feby 1st 1852' QTY: (1) NOTE: One of seventeen drawings Eleanore Vere Boyle executed for her first book 'Child's Play', a compilation of nursery rhymes published in 1852. Considered one of the most important female illustrators of the mid 19th century, Boyle moved in artistic circles which included Charles Eastlake, Thomas Landseer, the Pre-Raphaelites and Sir William Boxall (1800-1879) who was an English painter and director of the National Gallery from 1866 to 1874.

ELEANOR VERE BOYLE [E.V.B.] (1825-1916) "But he was only sunk in a dream of delight." Original illustration for The Story without an End, from the German of Carobe by Sarah Austin. (London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1868). Watercolor on paper. 145x116 mm; 5 3/4x4 1/2 inches, mounted to 7x6-inch stiff card. Tipped to window matte; framed. Provenance: The artist's family; Maas Gallery, 1980s; present owner. This is the beautiful original watercolor illustration given to Leighton Brothers engravers to translate into the color lithographs used in the first edition of the book. As a descendant of the Duke of Ancaster, Eleanor Vere Boyle was a member of the British peerage and an amateur painter and children's book illustrator. As her family looked askance at any one of her class or sex participating in the arts, she signed her work "EVB" and so worked within relative obscurity. Her husband was the son of the Earl of Cork. She specialized in elaborate Pre-Raphaelitesque watercolors for fairy tales. One of her most accomplished works was Friedrich Wilhelm Carové's The Story Without an End (1868), translated from the German by Sarah Austin.

ELEANOR VERE BOYLE (1825-1916): MUSHROOMS Gouache and colored pencil on paper, unsigned. 9 1/2 x 8 in. (sheet), unframed. Provenance: Collection of Lucien Goldschmidt; gift of Nicholas Goldsmith (son of Lucien Goldschmidt). Note: Eleanor Vere was born in Scotland and moved to England to marry Richard Cavendish Boyle, the son of the 8th Earl of Cork. Her husband was a rector and later served as chaplain to Queen Victoria. Boyle is known for her Victorian-era illustrations for children's books and her watercolor and gouache drawings, specifically drawings of gardens and garden design. Because of her social standing she rarely exhibited or sold her work during her lifetime.
