In between, however, he led an exciting, eventful and unique artistic life, with all its ups and downs. And a development in which he freed himself from academic constraints to achieve a painterly independence. He learnt the art of precise observation of nature as a pupil of Schirmer at the Karlsruhe School of Painting, before moving to Düsseldorf to study under Gude and Oswald Achenbach; years later – having in the meantime turned away from painting in disappointment – he was summoned to Berlin by Anton von Werner. There he enjoyed his first major successes as a representative of the official art of the German Empire. But he was increasingly threatened with being worn down by the conflict that arose between the traditional Wilhelmine demands on painting and the progressive tendencies manifesting themselves among the Secessionists. Drawn to the freer art of the French model, he gradually lost the support of the imperial family and moved to Dresden in 1901. There he was free to pursue plein air painting, in which it was no longer the subjects but rather his pictorial style that became the benchmark. In the years that followed, up until his return to Darmstadt in 1919, the focus of his works shifted increasingly towards luminist and atmospheric aspects. Narrative elements gradually disappear, and the areas of colour become noticeably looser. During his time in Dresden, when the three works shown here were also created, Eugen Bracht was at the height of his creative powers. The small Isola di Bergeggi lies in the Ligurian Sea not far from the coast, off the Riviera di Ponente. Eugen Bracht discovered it as a painterly motif during a study trip in 1892. The artist was repeatedly tempted to paint the lonely rock formation surrounded by sea and sky and to this day seven versions are known under the titles 'Island in the Mediterranean', 'Isola di Bergeggi' or 'The Blue Island'. The present version can be categorised as a late work by the artist and displays strong Impressionist traits. The extreme horizontal format is further emphasised by the high horizon line. In contrast to earlier versions of this motif, the island barely rises above this horizon line, suggesting an elevated location. In the strong light of the southern sun, the rocks contrast light grey and beige against the dark surface of the water. However, there is hardly any shadow play. The haptics of the surfaces of the rocks and water were important to Eugen Bracht in earlier versions of the motif; here he has almost completely abandoned them in favour of the pure impression of colour. Eugen Bracht occupies a special position within German landscape painting in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. As a highly successful academy professor in Berlin and Dresden, he remained loyal to more conservative, naturalistic trends for a long time, with form dominating over colour. At the end of the 1890s, his paintings became increasingly impressionistic. In his late work, Bracht's palette was reduced again and colour became the predominant element. 'The Blue Island' is an example of this development and concentration in the artist's late work. Manfred Großkinsky dates the present work to 1921. By the age of 17 Bracht had made the decision that his profession should be in the arts, and he entered the School of Art in Carlsruhe in 1859. From 1861 to 1864 he perfected his skills in Dusseldorf under the tutelage of Hans Fredrik Gude and then returned to Carlsruhe in 1875. By 1883 Bracht was skilled enough in his trade to replace Christian Wilberg as a professor at the Hochschule in Berlin. The following year Bracht was nominated as a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. He exhibited frequently in Berlin and Munich and won a medal in Berlin in 1881 and one in Munich in 1883. In 1909 Bracht exhibited a painting at the Exposition in Berlin ( link).

We are grateful to Manfred Großkinsky, Karlsruhe, for confirming the attribution on the basis of a high-resolution digital photograph and for the kind support. Two very different works of the landscape painter Eugen Bracht are for auction under the lot numbers 1152 and 1153 that indicate in their own way the artist's personal characteristic painting style and its development. With the stations in Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Dresden and eventually Darmstadt, Bracht shows the advancing of landscape painting from the realist view to the Impressionism. For the turn to this liberal style Eugen Bracht was a significant driving force during his years in Berlin from 1882 on - altough he was still closely connected to his colleagues at the Preußische Akademie and he did not join the Berliner Secession in 1892. To free himself from the firm structure, however, he finally left the capital's art scene after the turn of the century and took over a master studio at the the Dresden Kusntakademie. With his departure from his teaching activities he was drawn to the 'Mathildenhöhe' in Darmstadt, where he took over house of the painter Hans Christiansen in the artists' colony there. While his work with the chapel at the Riviera was created as an oil study in the course of one of his frequent excursions with students on site and thereby reflects the spontaneity and power of plein-air painting, the sächsische Landschaft that was created later conveys a distinctly different impression. From bird's-eye view the painter is looking widely into the landscape of the trough and portrays it and the fortified walls of Rochlitz Castle. This painting that was created at the atelier in his late years refers to a previous work and is composed accordingly and came into existence less freely - however, it still stands with its Impressionist choice of colours in the tradition of his earlier works. Großkinsky refers to another version of the view from the Mulde valley, painted in 1906, that is stored in Freiberg nowadays. Two very different works of the landscape painter Eugen Bracht are for auction under the lots numbers 1152 and 1153 that, in their own way, hint at the artist's very own characteristic style of painting and its development. With his stations in Karlsruhe, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Dresden and finally Darmstadt, Bracht shows the progression of landscape painting from the realist stance to Impressionism. S. 93 Das Bild dürfte in den ersten Jahren nach Brachts Rückkehr zur Malerei entstanden sein. Unzufrieden mit seiner Kunst verließ der 22-jährige kurzerhand die Düsseldorfer Akademie, wo er unter dem Norweger Hans Fredrik Gude und dessen einflussreichem Tutor Oswald Achenbach seit 1861 für drei Jahre studiert hatte. Zuvor hatte ihn 1859 Johann Wilhelm Schirmer an die Karlsruher Akademie geholt, von dem er sich schon 1861 verabschiedete. Im Sommer 1860 war er mit den nahezu gleichaltrigen Freunden Emil Lugo und Hans Thoma im Schwarzwald unterwegs. Zwölf Jahre lang hatte er der Kunst den Rücken gekehrt, war nach Belgien gegangen, dann nach Berlin, als Händler und Unternehmer, war durch die Umstände gescheitert, aber er war noch jung. Er hatte daneben privat andere Interessen als Nebenwege verfolgt, die Photographie und die Paläontologie. Noch war er mit 34 nicht zu alt. Er war gereift, die Welt lag vor ihm. Sein Blick auf die Dinge war sachlicher geworden, wachsam und entschieden. Als Maler wusste er nun, was er konnte und was er wollte – nicht an einem "Bild festhalten", oder verzweifeln, nichts hineinlegen wollen, was nicht vor ihm lag. So ist auch dieses Bild. Er sieht den warmen Sand, hell die Sonne reflektierend, die Hitze speichernden Felsen. Das tiefblaue Meer. Den in der Ferne leicht dunstigen, hellblauen Himmel. Und er freut sich die tanzenden Akzente der Felsen vor ihm zu sehen, die Freiheit ihres Rhythmus, die dem Bild Raum und Halt geben, ohne Anstrengung eines an etwas festhaltenden Willens. Reines, befreites Sehen. Man könnte das Bild umgekehrt aufhängen und die kleinen Felsen des Vordergrundes wären wie dunkle Wolken im Lichte einer untergehenden Sonne. Ja, er wollte auch die Welt sehen und ist dann viel gereist, in die Alpen, ans Mittelmeer, in den Orient. Ein Bild, das auf ähnliche, jedoch sparsamere Weise einen Raum erschließt, unter einem anderen Himmel, unter dem Wind die Wellen antreibt und die wenigen Gräser sich biegen, trägt das Datum 1877 und Bracht hat es mit Göhren (auf Rügen) bezeichnet. Zu seiner Zeit machte er mit seinen Dünenbildern Furore. Zeit seines Lebens war Bracht ein erfolgreicher Maler, offen gegenüber allem neuen in der Kunst. Diese Haltung kostete ihm die Aussicht, bei der Neubesetzung der Leitung der Preußischen Akademie zum Zuge zu kommen. So übernahm er die seit der Romantik berühmte Klasse für Landschaftsmalerei in Dresden.

A magical glow emanates from the heather-covered mountain cone that rises gently yet powerfully above the high moor. Rich in contrast, it stands out from its surroundings between the dusky, faint blue firmament and the light brown reeds. A sand dune in front of it reinforces this effect. Neither a path leads there, nor does one lead away from this place. Sublime silence lies over everything, the scenery seems motionless and one is inclined to hold one's breath - only in the foreground does the water draw circles, their origin uncertain. Above it, like small sparkling gems, sit the blossoms of the reed grass on narrow spars. Eugen Bracht, one of the most important German landscape painters of his time, creates a setting of unearthly beauty here. Over a period of almost six decades, the artist, who first joined the Düsseldorf Malkasten and later became close to Impressionism in the Berlin art scene, devoted himself almost exclusively to the many facets of nature. From the mid-1870s onwards, he was preoccupied with the landscape type of the heath. From then on, this formed an important core of his work and testified to a lasting fascination of both the artist and his audience for the unique area around Lüneburg. The high moorland near Bispingen - a mysterious place of seemingly endless expanses of peat and since time immemorial the spectre of man - fuelled Bracht's interest in the mystical dimensions of life. In the twilight zone between water and land, between life and death, the moor conveys a unique connection between nature and the human imagination. Stylistically, Bracht's symbolically charged, atmospherically permeated landscape in the present painting marks a tense transition from naturalistic to French Impressionist painting. Großkinsky refers to a later and somewhat smaller version of the painting from 1910, which is now kept in the Städtische Kunstsammlung Darmstadt. From Bracht's records it appears that the large-format painting offered here remained in the artist's wider family and was signed by "Wittebeke b. Bispingen mit röhrendem Hirsch". Wir danken Herrn Dr. Manfred Großkinsky, Karlsruhe, für die freundlichen Hinweise. - "Der Mühlgraben" liegt dem Registerbuch Brachts zufolge in Neudenau, einer kleinen Gemeinde nordöstlich von Bad Wimpfen, an der die Jagst vorbeifließt. Das Gemälde entstand im Oktober 1920 während einer Studienreise des Künstlers nach Hirschhorn am Neckar, von wo aus er Tagesausflüge in die nähere Umgebung unternahm. Von dem Motiv existiert auch eine verschollene Aquarellfassung von 1921 mit dem Titel "Vormittag am Mühlgraben".

Signed and dated lower left: Eugen Bracht 1877 In 1859, at the age of seventeen, Eugen Bracht drew the ruins of Dreieichenhain Castle near his home town of Darmstadt. The inked pencil drawing came from his estate to the Kupferstichkabinett of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe ( inv. no. VIII 1150-20, fig. 1). The subject was close to the artist's heart: in 1870 the view served him as a model for a landscape-format painting as a gift for his later wife (cf. Manfred Großkinsky: Eugen Bracht, Darmstadt 1992, p. 80, fig. 49). At that time Bracht worked as a wool merchant in Berlin. After his first training in Karlsruhe from 1859 to 1861 with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer he had turned away from painting to earn his living as a merchant. Dissatisfied with this, he dissolved his Berlin business in 1875 and resumed his studies at the Karlsruhe art school. In 1877 he began a successful freelance career (first in Karlsruhe, from 1882 in Berlin); the present painting was created in the same year. In dramatic vertical format, Dreieichenhain Castle once again becomes the central subject of the picture. The ruins of the tower are enthroned on a rocky base; the ascent leading diagonally into the picture from the right crosses the diagonal of the rocky hill and castle in the centre of the picture. The earth tones contrast with the abyss of the cool, misty lowlands behind. This is where the view leads through the enormous, centrally placed archway into the depths of the picture. Its dimensions are made clear by the addition of five guards in Baroque-style historical costumes. In this picture, with which he started his successful career as an artist, Bracht effectively combines contemporary landscape painting based on nature studies with a compositionally sovereign pictorial dynamic on the basis of the biographically influenced romantic subject.
