Description EN 'Le ménage heureux', 1853. Oil on panel (mahogany). Signed and dated 'Ferdinand De Braekeleer F(ECI) / Antwerpen 1853'. With an artist's label on the reverse mentioning the title, date and signature. Ferdinand de Braekeleer created this painting, together with its counterpart/ pendant 'Le ménage triste'. Both paintings were immediately shipped to the U.S. to be sold at The Free Belgian Gallery of Paintings in New York, run by the painter's son Ferdinand de Braekeleer the Younger. The gallery was a joint investment by father and son to promote Belgian arts across the ocean and find a new market for the Elder's artwork (cf. Baetens 2023, p. 25-54). Both pendants were acquired by philanthropist Wiliam Wilson Corcoran who later founded the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. The impish subject that portrays this painting and the spontaneous treatment that is granted to him are characteristic of the painting that was developed in the Netherlands in the XVII and XVIII centuries. A young man tries to flirt with a girl wearing a bonnet, taking advantage of the fact that her father has fallen asleep. The freshness of the gestures and countenances is combined with an attentive description of each of the objects inside, paying attention to the food on the table. The scene takes place in the warmth of the fireplace, next to which the old man sleeps peacefully after a sumptuous meal. At his feet, the cat gazes in wonder at the glowing embers. Ferdinand Henri Jean de Braekeleer is part of a family of Flemish painters from Antwerp that has many members, which can sometimes lead to confusion in attributions. In fact, he is the eldest son of Ferdinand de Braekeleer (known as the Old Man), the brother of Henri de Braekeleer (1840-1888), was the most prominent painter in the family. Following in the aesthetic wake of his family, The Younger, he produced genre scenes in the Flemish style of past centuries, such as the small canvas Family. He also painted 17th century interiors, portraits and views of the city. He participated in the Antwerp Salon of 1849. In 1852 he founded a gallery in New York where he sold the works of the Belgian school, the Belgian Painting and Statuary Gallery. In New York he exhibited in 1853 at the National Academy of Design a painting entitled Le plunder1. Ill, he returned to Antwerp to die there.

In this animated composition, Ferdinand de Braekeler, master of the Flemish costumbrismo of the XIX century, deploys all his narrative ingenuity and his fine observation of the daily life. The scene takes place in front of a rural tavern, where a man and a woman are engaged in a burlesque episode by swinging on a board placed on a barrel, as an improvised swing. The heavier woman remains on the ground while her companion rises into the air; she, with an accusing gesture, points to him as the culprit, while both show their faces lit up and a cheerful attitude that suggests they have had too much to drink. Around them, the life of the town stops to watch: the parishioners seated in front of the tavern observe the scene with amusement, others peek curiously through the windows, and a dog trots expectantly, attentive to the outcome of the game. Behind the protagonists, a tavern keeper with apron and jug in hand contemplates the scene, reinforcing the choral character of the composition. Braekeler shows his mastery of warm and luminous color, of expressive gesture without reaching caricature, and of the meticulously detailed popular setting, in a painting that combines humor, dynamism and social realism. Ferdinand de Braekeleer was an outstanding Flemish painter and engraver, known especially for his genre scenes of everyday life, as well as for his historical, religious and urban landscape paintings. He is called "the Old Man" to distinguish him from his son, also a painter. Born into a humble family in Antwerp in 1792, he was orphaned and was admitted to the school for poor children established by the painter Mattheus Ignatius van Bree. He continued his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where van Bree was also a teacher. In 1813 he won the painting prize at the Antwerp Salon with the work Aeneas Saving Anchises from the burning of Troy. In 1819 he won the Dutch Prix de Rome in the category of historical painting, which allowed him to travel to Italy (Rome, Naples, Venice) to perfect his art. After his return to Antwerp, he focused on works inspired by the Flemish Old Masters, including historical and genre scenes reminiscent of artists such as Jan Steen and David Teniers the Younger. His painting "The Antwerp Citadel after the Bombardment of 1832" won him wide recognition for its contemporary subject matter. In 1827 he married Marie-Thérèse Leys, sister of the painter Jan August Hendrik Leys, who later studied with him. Two of his sons, Ferdinand the Younger and Henri de Braekeleer, also became painters. He achieved international recognition with works such as The Schoolmistress and The 50th Wedding Anniversary. He was made a knight of the Order of Leopold and a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium. He was a co-founder of the Antwerp Artists' Association and, from 1855, became a professor at the Antwerp Academy. In 1864 he was appointed curator of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. De Braekeleer played a pivotal role in the renewal of 19th-century Belgian painting, both through the high quality of his genre works and through his influential role as a teacher of the next generation of artists. He died in Antwerp in 1883 at the age of 91.

In this painting, Ferdinand de Braekeleer adopts a more intimate and calm tone than in his burlesque scenes of tavern, focusing the attention on a young seamstress that sews in the interior of calm atmosphere. The main room, paved with a checkered floor, is softly lit from a side window, highlighting the textures of the fabric, the brightness of the furniture and the girl's serene expression. Beside her, an older man with a kindly countenance leans slightly towards her, while a dog rests in the foreground, completing the domestic atmosphere. In the background, through an open door, a second room can be glimpsed with customers seated around a table, engaged in conversation, which expands the spatial depth and reinforces the narrative character of the scene. Fragments of the outside world (profiles of houses, human figures) are visible through the windows, connecting the interior with village life. Demolition of the Antwerp city walls with the Begijnenpoort in front and the Sint-Jorispoort in back, October 1864. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated ‘De Braekeleer 1864’. In the second half of the 19th century, the Antwerp fortification lost its protective function and inhibited the expansion of the growing city. In 1864 the demolition began. Afterwards, a wide boulevard, the Leien, was built on top the filled-in moats. The Begijnenpoort was located on today's Kasteelpleinstraat at the intersection with the Amerikalei. In the background we see the more lavishly decorated Sint-Jorispoort. A photograph by Florent Joostens from October 1864, depicts the demolition works of this gate at a similar stage (cf. Ronny van de Velde (ed.) and Jan Ceuleers, 'Antwerp. Lost City 1860-1880'. Ronny Van de Velde-Ludion, 2016, ill. 24). In his composition, Ferdinand de Braekeleer shortens the actual distance between the two entrance gates in order to represent them in one image. In reality, it would be almost impossible to perceive both gates in one glance. Possibly De Braekeleer wanted to underline the grandeur of the demolition works with this somewhat inventive image. Dans la seconde moitié du 19ème siècle, les remparts ont perdu leur fonction. À partir de 1864, la démolition a commencé. Un large boulevard a été construit sur les douves comblées. La Begijnenpoort se trouvait dans l'actuelle Kasteelpleinstraat, à la jonction avec l'Amerikalei. À l'arrière-plan, on aperçoit la porte Saint-Georges, plus richement décorée. Une photographie de Florent Joostens datant d'octobre 1864 montre les travaux de démolition de cette porte à un stade similaire (cf. Ronny van de Velde (ed.) en Jan Ceuleers, 'Antwerpen. Verloren stad 1860-1880'. Ronny Van de Velde-Ludion, 2016, ill. 24). Dans sa composition, Ferdinand de Braekeleer raccourcit la distance réelle entre les deux portes d'entrée pour les représenter en une seule image. En réalité, il serait presque impossible de percevoir les deux portes d'un seul coup d'œil. Il est possible que De Braekeleer ait voulu souligner la grandeur des travaux de démolition par cette image quelque peu inventive. In de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw verloor de omwalling haar functie. Vanaf 1864 begon de afbraak. Op de gedempte grachten werd een brede boulevard, de Leien, aangelegd. De Begijnenpoort lag aan de huidige Kasteelpleinstraat op de kruising met de Amerikalei. In de achtergrond zien we de meer rijkelijk gedecoreerde Sint-Jorispoort. Een foto van Florent Joostens uit oktober 1864 toont de afbraakwerken van deze poort in eenzelfde stadium (cf. Ronny van de Velde (ed.) en Jan Ceuleers, 'Antwerpen. Verloren stad 1860-1880'. Ronny Van de Velde-Ludion, 2016, ill. 24). Ferdinand de Braekeleer verkort in zijn compositie de eigenlijk afstand tussen de twee toegangspoorten om ze in één beeld te kunnen weergeven. In werkelijkheid zou het bijna onmogelijk zijn om beide poorten in één oogopslag waar te nemen. Mogelijk wilde De Braekeleer met dit ietwat inventieve beeld de grootsheid van de afbraakwerken onderlijnen.
