Johann Christian Brand (1722 Vienna - 1795 ibid.): In the blue light Atmospheric nature piece with a view up the hill to a group of trees, 18th century, Watercolor Technique: Watercolor on Paper (blue) Inscription: inscribed and with collection stamp on verso Date: 18th century Description: Johann Christian Brand was one of the first landscape painters in Austria who, in the early second half of the 18th century, turned their attention to their immediate surroundings and no longer designed nature from an idealistic point of view according to its usefulness in the picture, but began to understand it as an aesthetic object in itself. However, there was no question of disregarding composition or harmony as a result. Rather, they sought to approach the landscape in such a way that the image found in nature already satisfied aesthetic demands. A kind of early ready-made that required little remodelling and satisfied a burgeoning idea of realism. Brandt has precisely captured this search and reproduction in the present sheet. Although at first glance everything appears to be a spontaneous notation of a section of nature, the watercolour satisfies all compositional requirements. The gentle guidance of the gaze up the hill to the group of trees that dominate the picture, the subsequent fall of the gaze with the subsequent transition to the background: all this gives the composition stability and makes it appear balanced. Much more important to Brand here, however, is the mood, which he captures very skilfully by letting the colour of the blue paper do the talking and accentuating it with the yellow dots in the foliage. The rest of the colour application is also subordinate to this evening mood, as the contours blur and the forms begin to dissolve in the diffuse twilight. For Hugo von Hofmannsthal, it was the magic of the evening hour "where things lose their corporeality and appear like shadows woven into the damp air, quivering with dark colour" and Brand seems to want to express precisely this in our watercolour. Gemäldepaar SÜDLICHE LANDSCHAFTEN MIT HIRTEN UND FIGUREN AN EINEM BRUNNEN Öl auf Holz. Eines parkettiert. Je 51 x 71 cm. Eins mittig unten signiert und datiert „JC Brand 1787“ und auf Brunnen bezeichnet als “Gessners Idylle T:V5.40“. In dekorativen Rahmen. Das eine Gemälde zeigt vor einem Waldrand eine junge Frau, stehend vor einem steinernen Sarkophag, auf dem die Worte „Hier ruht die As... des Mijcons...“ zu lesen sind. Ein kleiner Hund säuft gerade Wasser aus einem kleinen runden Becken. Links davon ein junger sitzender Mann und ein weiterer Stehender, der mit einem Stock die über der Inschrift wachsenden Zweige und Blumen zur Seite schiebt. Nach links geht der Blick in eine weite Landschaft, in der ein kleiner Rundtempel steht, auf einem hohen Berg unter hellblauem Himmel. Das andere Gemälde zeigt auf einer offenen, mit Blattwerk und Weinlaub bewachsenen Veranda eine junge Familie mit zwei Kindern und einem Hund, während nach rechts die Sicht auf eine weite Landschaft geht mit einem reitenden Hirten, der seine Tiere vorantreibt. Im Vordergrund rechts werden stilllebenhaft erlegte Vögel, Keramik und diverse Gemüsesorten wiedergegeben. Malerei mit vielen Details in der typischen Manier des bekannten Künstlers. Die Inschrift Gessners Idylle auf dem Brunnen nimmt wohl Bezug auf den Schweizer Maler und Idyllendichter Salomon Gessner (1730-1788), auf dessen idyllische Schäferdichtung, an das Altertum angelehnt. Anmerkung: Bei diesen beiden außergewöhnlich schönen Gemälden handelt es sich um frühe Akademiearbeiten, die durch die Zusammenarbeiten für Schloss Laxenburg nördlich bei Wien mit dem französischen Landschaftsmaler Jean-Baptiste Pillemant (1728-1808) entstanden sind. Dies erklärt sich auch dadurch, dass beide Landschaften sehr unter französischem Einfluss entstanden sind. Johann Christian Brand d. J. gehört zu den bedeutendsten Malern des 18. Johann Christian Brand (1722 Vienna - 1795 ibid.): In the blue light Atmospheric nature piece with a view up the hill to a group of trees, 18th century, Watercolor Technique: Watercolor on Paper (blue) Inscription: Inscribed and with collection stamp on verso Date: 18th century Description: Johann Christian Brand was one of the first landscape painters in Austria who, in the early second half of the 18th century, took on their immediate surroundings and no longer designed the found nature from an idealistic point of view according to its usefulness in the picture, but began to understand it as an aesthetic object in itself. It was out of the question, however, that composition or harmony would be disregarded as a result. Rather, they sought to nourish the landscape in such a way that the image they found in nature already satisfied aesthetic demands. A kind of early ready-made that needed little reshaping and satisfied a burgeoning idea of realism. Brandt has precisely captured this search and reproduction in the present print. Although at first glance everything seems like a spontaneous notation of a section of nature, the watercolour satisfies all compositional demands. The gentle guidance of the gaze up the hill to the group of trees that dominates the picture, the subsequent descent of the gaze with a subsequent transition into the background: all this gives the composition support and makes it appear balanced. Much more important to Brand here, however, is the mood, which he captures very skilfully by letting the colour of the blue paper speak more and accentuating it with the yellow dabs in the foliage. The rest of the paint application is also subordinate to this evening mood, for as in the diffuse twilight the contours blur and the forms begin to dissolve. For Hugo von Hofmannsthal, it was the magic of the evening hour "where things lose their corporeality and appear to be woven into the damp air like quivering shadows sucked full of dark colour" and Brand seems to want to express precisely this in our watercolour.
