In the same vein as the photographic landscape fetish, they present mountains as isolated bodies, no longer embedded in a dimensional context, and unattainable. They present mountains as objects that we may only gaze upon, that refuse to enter into a physical relationship with the viewer. But at the same time these compositions are realized in a form of painting with its own corporeality, that makes them tangible like a wall.     Herbert Brandl (hs art) Graz 1959 - 2025 Wien Ohne Titel Öl auf Leinwand 170 x 120 cm 2007-2010 rückseitig signiert und datiert: Brandl 07-10 Provenienz: Ausstellung Steiermark Herbert Brandl war ein Maler, dessen Werk zwischen expressiver Abstraktion und Figuration changiert. Dabei bezog er sich immer auf die Natur. 1992 nahm Brandl an der documenta IX in Kassel teil, 2007 vertrat er Österreich auf der Biennale in Venedig. Von 1978 bis 1983 studierte Herbert Brandl an der Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Wien. Die erste Galerieausstellung organisierte Peter Pakesch 1982, zwei Jahre später wurde der Künstler eingeladen, seine Arbeiten in der Neuen Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz zu zeigen. Als Vertreter der „Neuen Malerei“ wurde Brandl schnell international bekannt. Die frühen Arbeiten überzeugten durch eine geradezu eruptive Farbgebung. Als Expressionist möchte er dennoch nicht gesehen werden: „Das stimmt überhaupt nicht. Ich bin kein Expressionist, der seinen Gefühlen freien Lauf lässt. Ich wollte mich immer nur mit dem auseinandersetzen, was ich sehe, mit meiner Optik. Was ich mit meinen Bildern vermittle, konnte ich nie genau sagen.“ Seine Malerei entwickelte sich – nicht aus der Form heraus, sondern aus der Farbe. The purpose of Brandl’s painting is to make this image recognizable, not to process it, sublate it, or turn it into painting. Making it recognizable means preserving and intensifying the distance of the things and places that he needs to keep his desire for the realization of closeness alive. Brandl paints into this image; he traces it out with his colors, invests his labor in this image, loading it with masses of paint; he gives it weight and, with that weight, closeness. Only through this activity does the image become visible, but it is not something that was actually produced by the painting; it was already there before it was painted. In fact, one practical indication of this preexistence of the image is how little time Brandl needs to paint it. He needs more time to think up this image, to establish it before it is painted, and he also refers to many other paintings that precede each new one. Brandl is a painter who always paints yet another painting. Because the image comes before the painting, the painting is never finished with any image. The closeness into which Brandl pulls the image, with the weight of his paintings and the exertion of his activity, does not eliminate its distance. It anchors the distance, making the intangibility of the image tangible. But the image cannot be transformed, cannot be overcome; for its part, it makes the traces of the activity of painting the instruments of its visibility. To understand the elaborate contradiction between visuality and the physicality of the practice of painting it is necessary to consider Brandl’s dismissal of the paradigm of representation, a paradigm based on the effects of making the image visually similar to the object depicted. At the beginning of each centura, artists face the challenge of the new century and the associated processes and developments, which can scarcely be predicted in advance. The diversity of rock formations or crystalline structures is a source of inspiration for Brandl's paintings, which always explore the fine line between figuration and abstraction. In his turn to landscape painting, Brandl breaks with the tradition of this genre, as it were. For it is not the veduta, the reproduction of a view, that is in the foreground for Brandl. He is much more interested in the spatial realisation of these colour and light effects of natural origin in painting. He intuitively reduces found motifs, whether glaciers or waterfalls, to their essence and executes his mostly large-format works with great concentration, speed and without interruption. Gestural Roar In the painting presented here, movement dominates both on the level of the motif and on the level of the painting. Brandl's gestural style seems to arise from the immediate elementary experience as a necessary physical expression. With this dynamic painting technique, Brandl attempts to correspond to the elemental force of the waterfall with its roaring and foaming spray. He uses a dark palette to contour greenish glowing mountains and black rocks, setting them as calm islands in the picture, washed by the wild masses of water. The rushing cascades and the raging torrent, as an almost untamed river of brushstrokes shimmering between icy turquoise and clear white, are set against these static manifestations, which prove to be veritable anchor points of the composition. The interplay between still and moving sections and the contrast between light and dark allow the developed form and the free colour matter to coexist, the latter no longer subject to formal constraints. In this way, the natural phenomenon becomes a pretext for illustrating essential artistic questions. This is where desire leads – its distance turns something into the object of a longing for closeness. But this also means that the distance cannot be bridged or erased. The distance of things must be preserved, it must even be heightened, because otherwise their closeness loses its appeal. Only from the greatest distance is it worthwhile to realize a closeness. Thus, Brandl turns to such things that have not yet undergone a process of transformation but already exist, grown or formed, things of nature. These are things that are, by their nature, as indeterminate and unattainable as possible, in both spatial and temporal senses – the highest mountains, landscapes between water and land, between light and darkness, a waterfall, wind, fog. They are intangible places, to which one feels drawn if the socially and practically assigned place in life is insufficient, places of ecstasy, where difficult-to-describe moods and sensations of the subject find their echo. Herbert Brandl’s first paintings of mountains were created after a visit to Switzerland: overwhelmed by the majestic peaks, glaciers and the radiant light, he stored, as it were, the archetypes of the mountains in his head and began, at first only from imagination, to paint pictures in which the line between abstraction and representational painting became blurred. Later, he also used photographs as "models". The untitled works focus on the form, appearance and essence of the mountains, whereby colour fields can simultaneously represent snow, earth, grass, sky, ice or air. The artist prepares his pictures mentally, but they are painted with very fast, expressive strokes, incorporating chance occurrences and accidents as well as constant intuitive changes. Real things that have been seen and unclear memories are thus quickly and dynamically translated into a pictorial language. In the process, he also likes to smear paint with small wooden blocks or kitchen paper. Using a wallpaper brush, white splashes are transformed into snowfields or crusts of light-coloured paint are applied, plaster-like, with a trowel and scraped off again to become ice. Brandl takes images from nature, stores them in his mind and processes them anew through painting. His chosen form is in keeping with bold ways of seeing: monumental dimensions, intensive colours and frontal views "conquer" the landscape without harming or devaluing it. Nature is presented as an abstract pictorial illusion in which pure colour creates a sensual connection with the landscape. "The direct encounter and transformation are, then, the two most important aspects of the aesthetic contemplation of nature and of landscape painting. Landscape is not merely one’s perception of the earth’s surface, but a mental act in which, with the aid of observation of nature, self-reflection and mood, the portion of nature perceived is recreated and experienced as an image of the whole of nature."
