Numbered 35 in ink in lower margin recto; photographer's stamp on verso. - - Bill Brandt's nude photography is characterized by its dramatic lighting and innovative compositions. Produced primarily during the mid-20th century, Brandt's nudes challenge conventional notions of beauty and femininity, often emphasizing abstract and sculptural qualities in the human form. His work in this genre is considered a significant contribution to the art of photography, leaving a lasting impact on the exploration of light, shadow, and form in the depiction of the nude. – Corners slightly bumped, some handling creases and signs of minimal oxidation in edges of image, otherwise in good condition. - - Lit.: Haworth-Booth, Mark and Lawrence Durrell. BILL BRANDT (1904–1983) | Parlourmaid and Underparlourmaid ready to serve dinner, Great Britain, London c. 1934/36 Image Size: 34,4 x 29,7 cm English: Gelatin silver print, printed c. 1980 on double-weight semi-matte paper, in excellent condition. Signed by the photographer in ink in the lower margin In Brandt’s first book, “The English at Home” (1936), he juxtaposed the privileged and working classes, frequently using his friends and family as subjects. Pratt, the stern parlourmaid in the country house of one of the photographer’s wealthy uncles, was a particular favorite of Brandt's, perhaps because she so thoroughly inhabited her role.
