Pair of decorative oil-on-canvas reproductions after celebrated Polish painter Jozef Brandt (1841-1915), likely dating to the early-to-mid 20th century, depicting two of his best-known genre compositions: Conversation at the Well and Meeting (Treffen). Each bears Brandt signature and retains a German identification label on the reverse identifying the artist, medium, and image dimensions. The surfaces exhibit visible brushwork and appear to be hand-finished or hand-enhanced reproductions produced after the original works. Presented in attractive gilt frames and well suited for traditional or European-inspired interiors. Sold as decorative reproductions after the works of Jozef Brandt, not as original paintings by the artist. Measures 40" x 28" and 28" x 18" framed. One frame is loose. Jozef Brandt (1841-1915) was one of Poland's most celebrated 19th-century painters, renowned for his richly detailed depictions of historical cavalry scenes, military encampments, and everyday life on the Polish-Ukrainian frontier. A leading representative of the Munich School, Brandt studied in Paris and Munich before establishing an international reputation. A gathering of three landscape works on paper, each spun from a different hand and a different latitude. The first, signed "Glesver" by an anonymous artist active in the twentieth century, is rendered in charcoal heightened with white chalk, almost certainly a view of Glesvaer along the rugged Norwegian coast south of Bergen, where fishing skerries and low islands meet the open sea. The second, after the Polish painter Jozef Brandt (1841-1915), is a photogravure titled "A Hunting Party," reproducing one of Brandt's characteristic equestrian compositions: a hunter pauses among his horses on a windswept steppe, the figures pulled forward in finely worked tone while the foreground grasses dissolve into atmospheric light. The plate was issued by Gebbie and Co. of Philadelphia, a leading late nineteenth-century publisher of fine photogravure portfolios drawing on the European salon painters. The third is the work of Adrian Keith Graham Hill (British, 1895-1977), a pen and ink drawing titled "Ship Building Rye," dated 1923 and signed, titled, and dated at lower right. Hill, a veteran of the First World War who became a pioneer of art therapy and a familiar face on early BBC television, captures the timbered slipways and working hulls of the Sussex coastal town in confident, draughtsmanlike line. Together the three sheets trace a quiet itinerary across northern landscapes, from the Norwegian shore to the Mazovian plain to an English harbor between the wars. Józef von Brandt earned widespread acclaim for his grand battle scenes depicting Poland’s 17th-century conflicts against the Tatars, Swedes, and Ottomans, gaining recognition in two worlds. He was highly regarded both within the Munich artistic circle—where he regularly exhibited at the city’s annual shows from 1889 and was awarded the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown—and in his native Poland, where he was offered the directorship of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (Akademia Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie) in 1891. Even during his student years, he became a key figure within the Polish artists’ colony in Munich, which included Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski and Ladislaus von Czachórski. Brandt’s works are distinguished by their vivid use of colour and masterful perspective, which lend vibrancy to his compositions. He was known for his dynamic depictions of Cossacks, mercenaries, and soldiers engaged in Eastern European battles and daily life, as can be seen in this painting from 1906. In this work, Brandt portrays a dramatic moment in a carriage accident. At the centre of the composition, two distressed horses dominate the scene—the chestnut horse in the lead rears up, while the black horse beside it stumbles, seemingly on the verge of collapse. Both horses are harnessed to a carriage that has clearly veered out of control. The figures in the painting react with urgency and intensity. In the foreground, a man in a red shirt dashes forward with his arm raised and a whip in hand, seemingly attempting to restore order. Meanwhile, the men aboard the carriage struggle to manage the reins, one of them appearing to panic. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of a camp, with straw huts and tents visible in the distance. Brandt employs a highly dynamic composition, marked by strong diagonals, vigorous equine movement, and expressive gestures, all of which heighten the dramatic tension. This painting stands as a superb example of realistic 19th-century history painting, executed with Brandt’s characteristic mastery. Through meticulous studies of horses, riders, and their accoutrements, he not only conveys a historically accurate image of the era but also constructs a compelling narrative of conflict, control, and chaos.

Unterhalb der Darstellung datiert, signiert und mit einer Widmung an die Tante in polnischer Sprache, verso von fremder Hand übersetzt "Der geliebten Tante / in Dankbarkeit / v. ihrem Neffen Josef" sowie "August 1855". Der polnische Künstler und Wahl-Münchner Józef Brandt, der aufgrund seiner adeligen Abstammung auch Josef von Brandt genannt wird, gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Nationalkünstler Polens. Der Sohn eines wohlhabenden Arztes und einer talentierten Amateurmalerin geht 1858 nach Paris, wo er schnell den Vorlesungssaal der Ingenieursfakultät gegen Pinsel und Staffelei austauscht. Es folgen ausgedehnte Reisen in seiner Heimat und der Ukraine, bevor er 1863 beschließt, in München an der Akademie bei Karl von Piloty zu lernen. In München verbleibt er mit Ausnahme der in Polen verbrachten Sommermonate zeit seines Lebens. Bald wird sein Atelier, in dem er exotische Requisiten von seinen Reisen im Osten aufbewahrt, zu einer regelrechten Attraktion. In den kommenden Jahrzehnten finden seine Schlachtenbilder mit reitenden Kosaken sowie die Genre-, Jagd- und Marktszenen reißenden Absatz. Die hier angebotenen Zeichnungen stammen jedoch aus dem Frühwerk, als der noch junge Gymnasiast vor seinem Umzug nach Paris erste Versuche auf das Papier brachte. In 1858, he travelled to Paris to study at the École Centrale Paris, but was persuaded by his countryman Juliusz Kossak to devote himself to painting. Painters Kossak and Henryk Rodakowski were Brandt''s first art teachers in Paris, along with Léon Coignet. Josef von Brandt moved to Munich in 1862, opening his own studio and practicing under the tutelage of artists Karl Piloty and Franz Adam. During this period, Munich became somewhat of a mecca for Polish artists, and von Brandt began to gain notoriety and financial success, establishing a school for young, mostly Polish, painters. In his lifetime he was elected to the Berlin Academy, Munich Academy, and Prague Academy. While known for his depictions of Cossak wars and battle scenes, von Brandt was also highly skilled at depicting Polish peasant life, with horses being central to most of his compositions, as in the present work.

BRANDT, JOSEF VON 1841 Szczebrzeszyn - 1915 Radom "Wyjazd na Polowanie". (Start to the Hunt). Oil on canvas. 64 x 120,5 cm. Signed and labelled in Polish lower right: Josef Brandt, 2 Warsaw / Munich. Framed. Provenance: Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia. In deep snow a convoy of carriages, horsemen and dogs rides through a small village. The convoy consists of huntsmen on their way to a wintry hunt. Probably there are even more carriages belonging to this group, because one of the horsemen is turning around, shouting as if to ask his companions to hurry. The original title of this painting "Wyjazd na Polowanie" - Start to the Hunt - can be learned from an antiquarian postcard. Such vivid hunting scenes belonged to Josef von Brandt's favoutrite genre motifs. The great artistic skills of the Polish painter can particularly be made out in the realistic depiction of the animals in effectful motion. Also the warm clothes of the huntsmen are depicted in detail so that even the knitting pattern of one cap is clearly visible. Josef von Brandt is one of the most important Polish painters of the 19th century. He studied painting in Paris and Munich. After a couple of journeys through his home country, Poland, he settled in Munich in 1863. Especially his vivid slaughtering scenes with a detailled depiction of Cossacks, horsemen and horses made von Brandt known, but also his realistic genre scenes on markets and on the hunt were part of his repertoire.
